  • Welcome to Visual Data System’s free eAcademy Summer Series
  • New Kids on the Block is a three part series made especially for those of you who are new to Instagram, Pinterest, and Tumblr for business and want to know: “DO I REALLY NEED ANOTHER SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM TO MANAGE??”
  • In our quick tour here, of the “new kids” we will look at a few stats that tell us WHY you should care about these new visual platforms. Next we’ll talk about what these new social media tools have in common and look at some examples of WHO is using them well. Finally, we will briefly go over what it takes to get your business set up and running on Instagram and Pinterest.
  • Yes, it seems like there is always another social tool to manage, but like it or not, Pinterest and Instagram seem to be here to stay. And actually, they are both pretty fun and surprisingly easy to manage.
  • As the 3 rd most popular social media site, Pinterest really can’t be ignored. “Travel” is one of the top 10 Categories on Pinterest “Favorite Places and Spaces” is the 6 th most popular board name
  • With the launch of the android app, Instagram surpassed 40 million users. And you can be sure now what Facebook has acquired the company, we will soon see a desktop version of the app. With more than 5 million pictures uploaded a day, do you wonder how many of those are pictures YOUR customers are taking? Instagram is a natural for the “nostalgia” associated with vacation with filters that lend themselves to making memories.
  • Why these two platforms in general? Because they are so visual. People love images: they tell a story. Creating unique images and scrapbook like boards gives people an outlet for self expression that the other platforms lack. With shorter attention spans and less time, more message can be packed into an image. Or perhaps it can better catch their attention! Finally, so many people have high quality cameras with them at every moment! Everyone is capturing images and you want to leverage that.
  • Especially in the Vacation Rental industry, you know that your customers are collecting memories through photos each time they stay with you. Source that wealth of “visual” recommendations they are ready to make by giving those customers a special place to share their memories.
  • Now we will take a look at who is using Pinterest and Instagram well. Though you might assume that both are dominated by fashion and furniture, there are many other kinds of business with very engaged followers! The Travel Channel with nearly 800 pins describes their boards as “Your source for travel inspiration and more.”
  • And here with a few of Whole Foods Market’s boards we see that their success on Pinterest (over 45,000 followers) is grounded in their presence as a “person” more than a brand. They reveal lifestyle, the business’s commitment to philanthropy and to recycling, as well as the food you would expect!
  • On to Instagram! Let’s look at some businesses that are getting it right… General Electric has capitalized on the uniqueness of their products and the ability to share in a striking way what so many of us never get to see. And they have over 100,000 followers!
  • Starbucks encourages customers to hashtag #starbuck and they have over half a million followers
  • And hotels like Morgans Hotels are using Instagram to give potential customers a more interesting view of their properties and rooms.
  • Both are actually fairly east to set up, though there is a little more up-front energy needed to set up Pinterest boards. The great thing about both of them is that you don’t have to generate all of your content yourself! For Instagram you can encourage others to hashtag their photos with a tag you share with them. With Pinterest you can go “surf” other people’s boards and re-pin them along with images from your own website.
  • So the key is to appreciate the marriage of SOCIAL and VISUAL in these two new platforms. Leverage the visual nature of your business along with the inherent use of photography in your customers’ experiences at your own properties.
  • Now a little preview of Part 2 and Part 3 of our NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK series! PART 2: Getting Started, Optimizing your page, Quick Tips, Promotion Ideas, Hosting a Competition for PINTEREST PART 3: Getting Started, Optimizing your page, Quick Tips, Promotion Ideas, Hosting a Competition for INSTAGRAM AND TUMBLR
  • When you request an invite directly from the site, you may receive your invitation via email within a few days but might have to wait over a week You can connect your Pinterest account to Twitter (make sure profile picture fits dimension space) Currently, you cannot connect a Facebook business profile with your Pinterest account
  • The earth symbol, to the right of the profile picture, is a link to the website.
  • Edit your profile by going to Settings under the drop down below your name Edit your board by choosing the Edit button under each of your individual boards Consider using keywords you already target on your website
  • Choose each board topic carefully to build the following you want for your brand Pinterest is a sharing community, and pinners can be deterred from boards that are too much about a company selling. Pinterest specifically states, “Pinterest is designed to curate and share things you love.  If there is a photo or project you’re proud of, pin away!   However, try not to use Pinterest purely as a tool for self-promotion. ” Select the most active fans to help you build a board Some board ideas "Fan favorites" "Fan recommended attractions" By entering in the Url http://pinterest.com/source/yourdomainname.com After seeing which images are already pinned from your website, repin these existing pins if they are related to your topic boards
  • Take advantage of other social media channels to get the most exposure: Add the Pin It widget to your site Add a Follow Us button to your site Share your URL on blog posts
  • Consider having participants include pins or repins from other sources because with multiple sources, a board will have a higher chance of being found by another pinner
  • As you can see in the example, the ocean image has 14 hearts (similar to Facebook “Like”) and one comment (just in case people wonder what those are)
  • Now, when you share your Instagram photos on your Facebook Page, Facebook automatically creates a new tab with an Instagram feed of the photos you share directly from the mobile app At the top of this tab there are small thumbnails of your four most recent photos Likes and comments from Facebook are displayed in the feed Use your photos as Profile pictures or cover photos on other social media sites Instagram redesigned its web view, now your friends can comment and like your photos downloaded onto Facebook from the link provided on your Timeline if they are Instagram users When logged in you can also delete comments, follow, and unfollow users Statigram This software provides a webviewer, statistics, and management tools and should be considered for avid users that are interested in optimizing their photos
  • Here is an example of how you can setup your mobile Instagram app to post your images to other social media sites, like Facebook.
  • Example of a photo contest using Instagram
  • From your dashboard, there is an "Explore Tumblr" button on the right hand side Discover new people to follow by category Engagement includes reblogs and likes See what the most popular tags are to see what Tumblr's audience in interested in hearing about Include these tags where they are relevant
  • When you use tags in your posts, they can be discovered beyond just the people that are following you Use images related to business history, behind the scenes, employee favorites, inspirational, of the area About least half of Tumblr's daily posts are image-based
  • Spotlight and radar options are for undisclosed sums
