  • The year started slowly, but hotel room occupancy picked up this summer Average room rates also dropped early in the year, but have since picked up and surpassed those seen in 2010 2010 was one of the best years for hotel occupancy, so to continue matching the 2010 performance is an achievement in itself, despite the trend for late bookings In the first 6 months of the year, average room rates were 2% lower than the same period in 2010 (£74.52), but improved over the summer, with the third quarter showing a 2% gain over Q3 in 2010 (£84.48). Many other cities have reported decreasing room rates for a year or so now, so hopefully this is York showing a quicker than average recovery As seen in the hotel sector, there was a similar pattern in visitors to attractions Again, summer saw strong gains in visitor numbers Visits to attractions are also keeping ahead of numbers tracked last year Quarter 3 (June to Sept) was particularly successful, with a 4% increase over last year. Q1 up 3% and Q2 up 1%
  • 78% of our visitors have previously visited and 75% intend to come back in the next 2 years A huge 99% will recommend a visit to York to friends and family, higher than anywhere else in the region % of staying visitors taking short breaks (1 to 3 nights) has increased from 58% 3 years ago to 73% this year Visitors are enjoying (on average) 4 different activities during their trip, which has increased by 10% despite the shorter length of stay 91% told us they enjoyed a meal out as part of their trip, up from 64% last year. Other top activities are strolling around, attractions, shopping and visiting historic properties High satisfaction scores are achieved for the quality, value for money, customer service and range of shops, places to eat and drink, attractions, accommodation, the VIC and for the city overall
