Vineet Dalal: The bioplastic plastic market is divided into two categories; the bio-based plastics such as bio-PET for example with Coca-Cola and drop-in molecules, and then you have the compostable plastic stream. In the compostable packing the bulk of the application has been in compostable bags for food waste and organic waste collection, food packaging, compostable cutlery and dishware. Most of this has been driven by organic waste and food waste diversion; to divert food waste collection from landfill to composting. This is the trend seen in the US, and we suspect the same for the UK. The other applications we have seen are in mulch films and agriculture films. Each market has a specific requirement when using biodegradable materials, and limitations on the use of synthetic materials. For example; a current on-going debate is whether we can use compostable films for organic farming. The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) has certain restrictions on synthetic materials in organic farming, however, an argument has been made to exempt compostable films from the synesthetic category because these can be completely biodegraded and the carbon is assimilated by microorganisms.
