Visiongain would like to thank Chris Nott,CTO Big Data & Smarter Analytics, at IBM UK & Ireland, for his participation in this interview, andproviding us with an expert insight on the big data analytics market. We would also like to thankKathy Tyler, UK External Relations at IBM Software Group for arranging this interview.7.1.1 IBM Company Background and Involvement in Big Data AnalyticsVisiongain: Please give us a little background about your company and your big dataservice offerings.Chris Nott: IBM has technology and services offerings for big data. We have invested $16bn inacquiring big data and analytics technology companies over the past ten years and in originalresearch and organic product development. This is to able to offer our clients a complete portfolioto meet their challenges and capitalise on their opportunities. Our services offerings span strategy, delivery and hosting. Overall IBM provides capability for 1) data and information foundationinfrastructure, hardware and software, to manage and govern data; 2) analytics through tools andtechniques; 3) analytics solutions which meet common business needs.7.1.2 Key Trends & Recent Developments in the Big Data MarketVisiongain: What would you say are the key trends and recent developments in the big datamarket and why?Chris Nott: We are seeing a continued shift in big data adoption from education and exploration toactual project implementations. Clients are identifying business opportunities which can beenabled by combining new data sources with existing data sources and more powerful analytics. For example, the digitisation of so much that is happening provide new types of large and realtime data, much of which may be unstructured, analytical technologies and techniques are able toextract insight more quickly and accurately than before. Driving all of this is competition: in 2012,63% of organisations said they were realising competitive advantage from information andanalytics compared with 37% in 2010. CEOs are seeking to know there customers as individuals:improving customer-centric outcomes are the largest driver for big data. Operational optimisationand risk/financial management are the next two largest drivers.

Page 96Www.visiongain.com Page 96World Big Data Market Opportunities 2013-2018: Converging Data Architectures8.2.2.1 Amazon Web Services (AWS)Amazon led the way in the cloud computing space by launching Amazon Web Services (AWS) in2002 and is one of the largest players in the big data computing space. Amazon’s low pricing ideasand developer community support were one of the major factors in driving the platform’s successwith developers. In terms of general diversity of services offered, AWS offers services on both Microsofttechnologies and Non-Microsoft technologies. For example, AWS offers Relational DatabaseManagement Systems (RDBMS) on cloud in the form of Oracle and SQL Server both (in additionto mySQL and others. It also allows both Windows and Linux server platforms.AWS can quickly and easily enable any enterprise to start generating insights from their data. Aftera brief overview of the AWS Big Data toolset, we’ll focus on Amazon Elastic Map Reduce, showinghow to easily create and customize dynamic Hadoop clusters. Participants will leverage theAmazon Elastic Map Reduce command line tools along with Amazon Public Datasets to generateinsights in the domains of social media using public twitter follow graphs, life sciences using publicPubChem datasets and log analysis using sample data. In the process participants will exploreseveral different programming models including Hive, Pig and Hadoop Streaming.8.2.3 Cisco SystemsCisco Systems, Inc. is the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet. Today, networks are anessential part of business, education, government, and home communications. Cisco hardware, software, and service offerings are used to create the Internet solutions that make these networkspossible, giving individuals, companies, and countries easy access to information anywhere, at anytime. In addition, Cisco has pioneered the use of the Internet in its own business practice andoffers consulting services based on its experience to help other organizations around the world.Cisco’s big data offerings include:Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS): Cisco UCS unifies computing, networking, management, virtualization, and storage access into a single integrated architecture. This uniquefabric-based infrastructure helps to enable end-to-end server visibility, management, and control inboth bare metal and virtual environments. It is an ideal platform for big data applications due to theexceptional performance, capacity, and manageability of the UCS solution.
