For the Japanese market, Visiongain expects the number of LTE-A subscriptions to represent a
larger share of 4G subscriptions from 2017 onwards (Chart 5.31). However, from 2019 to 2020 the
growth in the overall number of 4G subscriptions will have the slowest pace since 2012; this will be
caused by the saturation levels reached on the number of LTE-A subscriptions.
Between 2015 and 2017 Visiongain expects the number of LTE-A subscriptions to increase
surprisingly fast, as they will increase their share of 4G subscriptions from 22% in 2015 to 59% in
2017. This will be motivated not only by the growth in LTE-A subscriptions and the availability of
more LTE-A handsets, but also by the decreasing number of LTE subscriptions, which will pass
from being 68.5 million in 2015 to be 50.5 million in 2017. For 2020, LTE-A will have 70% of the
total 4G connections in Japan, with a further decrease in the number of LTE subscriptions to 43.2
million (Chart 5.32).

Chart 5.57 and Table 5.58 provide a regional break down of Internet of Things revenue forecasts.
They show how the region with the largest chunk of the revenue in 2015 will be Europe at $298.2
billion, growing to 674.6 billion by 2020. The rest of the global regions will not be able to match the
strong market opportunity that Europe represents for IoT.
This will attract operators to increase their deployments of LTE-A to serve these types of devices
and diversify their revenue models away from mobile communication services. However, LTE-A
technology will not provide coverage for all IoT sectors, as in most cases such as wearable
technology and smart grids, these devices will only require a 2G connection to work efficiently.

5.6 Rest of the World (ROW) 4G & LTE-Advanced Subscriptions Forecast
2015-2020
The Rest of the World is expected to have the smallest number of 4G connections between 2015
and 2020. Nonetheless, this region will have the fastest growth from 2017 onwards as this is when
4G technology is adopted more strongly in all the other regions in the world.
It is widely known that there are a large number of countries with commercial 4G LTE deployments
already working, but due to the price of LTE handsets and the low purchasing power in most of the
countries in the developing world, the number of 4G connections is only expected to be 21.1 million
in 2015.
Between 2015 and 2017, the number of 4G connections in the RoW regions is expected to grow
with a CAGR of 73.9% as the number of subscriptions will increase from 21.1 million to 63.8
million. Similarly, for the latter period 2017-2020 the number of 4G subscriptions will increase at
dramatic rate from 63.8 million to 372.6 million representing a CAGR of 80.1%.

8. Leading Companies in the Global LTE-A Market
Overall, there exist a large number of submarkets and regional industries behind the development
of LTE-A. Visiongain presents a detailed description of the main companies in terms of LTE-A
infrastructure and those mobile operators investing heavily in LTE-A deployments. Additionally,
this section will present a list of all other infrastructure providers and handset manufacturers which
present the greatest potential to develop the technology even further thanks to their devices.
8.1 Ericsson
Ericsson is a market-leader in LTE and LTE-A infrastructure equipment. Ericsson has supplied the
large majority of the commercial 4G networks already deployed and has signed contracts with the
leading operators. For a brief company overview please see Table 8.1 below.

Ericsson is the undisputed leader in development of 4G and offers networks with superior
performance when it comes to stability, throughput, and latency – the most important key factors
for end-users of 4G. Ericsson offers LTE in both technology tracks; LTE FDD and TD-LTE and
collaborates with all leading players in the industry to secure the eco system. The company has
also been present in different tests of LTE-A, and has been the partner of the large majority of
MNOs launching LTE-A.
Today, 50% of the world's 4G smartphone traffic is served by Ericsson networks, which is more
than double the traffic of their closest competitor. Ericsson also powers the two world's first
