Expert Opinion ____ 7.1 Adeline Farrelly, Secretary General & Michael Delle Selve, Senior Communications Manager – FEVE 7.1.1 What Are The Benefits Of Glass Packaging Relative To Rival Materials? Visiongain: What are the benefits of glass packaging relative to rival materials? Adeline Farrelly and Michael Delle Selve: The biggest strength of glass packaging is its inert property. This means that glass packaging is able to 100% protect the products contained within the packaging. All other rival materials struggle with the problem of creating inertness, with most packaging materials requiring a plastic lining to protect the products against the external packaging material. This is why glass packaging is used to protect all delicate products. The inert nature of glass is also a key consideration if the product needs to sit in the packaging for long periods of time, for example with wines and whiskeys. An additional strength of glass packaging is the fact that glass is 100% recyclable. Glass packaging is known as a ‘permanent material’ - glass packaging can be recycled indefinitely without any loss in the quality of the glass, and glass retains its inert property throughout its lifetime. Other packaging solutions are also 100% recyclable, for example aluminium and steel cans, so glass packaging is not unique in this aspect. Plastic and paper packaging lose quality and properties as they are recycled, resulting in a loss in material as the number of cycles increases. Another consideration for glass packaging is the aesthetics of the material; glass is beautiful, and is the most beautiful packaging material. Customers appreciate this beauty of glass, and as a result glass packaging has value. Glass packaging provides shelf presence and the ability to show off a product in all its glory, as well as attracted higher value. And last not least, 74% of European consumers largely prefer and recommend glass as the solution for their preferred food and drinks. They know food and drinks need the protection of its container to preserve purity, because health is not only in the ingredients but also in the packaging that preserves these ingredients. Consumers who believe glass is the best packaging option for their preferred food and drinks support glass by joining the Friends of Glass community on www.friendsofglass.com
