Expert Opinion 7.1 Nilsy Desaint – Communications Manager at Green Biotechnology Europe (Europa Bio) 7.1.1 The Key Trends and Developments in the Agricultural Biotechnologies Sector Nilsy Desaint: In terms of key trends, we can clearly see that agricultural biotechnologies are widely adopted globally, and it is increasing. According to the latest annual report from the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA), areas planted with GM crops in emerging and developing countries now exceed those of industrialised countries. It shows that this is a technology largely used by farmers in emerging and developing countries. Globally, GM crop planting is more important than the entire EU agriculture in terms of number of farmers and arable land used. Looking ahead to 2015, it is estimated that 20 million farmers will be growing GM crops in 40 countries on about 200 million ha, and that the number of GM events commercially cultivated worldwide will increase sharply. GM crops are adopted mostly outside Europe, even though the European Union (EU) heavily depends on GM imports to satisfy its domestic demand. This is because of the GM stalemate in the EU, and legally questionable bans that are in place in a number of EU countries. 7.1.2 The Challenges and Opportunities in the Agricultural Biotechnologies Sector Nilsy Desaint: As regards challenges, and this does not apply to Europe only, trade and more precisely import approvals is the main challenge. For example, if a GM product is approved in one region of the world and not yet approved in another one, this discrepancy can lead to trade disruptions. This is caused by the difference in the time needed to assess the safety and approve GM crops (safety for human and animal consumption, and the environment), combined with a zero tolerance approach in the EU and some other geographies towards traces of not yet approved GM events. For example, the pace of GM approvals in the EU is very slow compared to other regions of the world. While the EU takes close to 3.7 years on average for an import approval, approvals in Brazil take just over 2 years, and the U.S. is aiming at 1.5 years.
