It is more durable than ABS and has an excellent cost/performance ratio. 3D printing is a priority for Germany. Its manufacturing faces an extremely competitive environment that rewards efforts to improve production methods. German precision engineering techniques would blend well with 3D printing technology for creating high quality products, and high German labour costs give companies incentives to move to innovative production methods. Unlike genetically modified organisms or nuclear power, new technologies that have drawn opposition from Germany’s powerful Green Party, AM is in keeping with the country’s environmental goals. Visiongain projects the German 3D printing market to be worth $285 million in 2014 and $1.78 billion in 2019. This will represent a notably high 44.3% CAGR for the forecast period. The proposed adobe would be assembled from 2.5m high and 1.7m wide blocks generated with a custom AM machine named the KamerMaker. This is a larger equivalent of a desktop 3D printer capable of producing plastics up to 10 times thicker than its smaller counterpart. The result would be a 13-room canal house made from interlocking components. Rooms could be generated separately and then combined to form the finished house. While this more radical usage will not enter the mainstream during the forecast period or soon after it, it has stretched the potential of 3D printing in yet another field. During the forecast period, visiongain believes that a majority of AM use will be confined to the office rather than the building site, with some 3D printed items being used in the actual construction. Page 70www.visiongain.com 3D Printing Technologies Market Report 2014-2019: Consumer & Industrial Applications, Technologies & Leading Companies 6.1 3D Systems Charles Hull is the founder of 3D Systems, the creator of SLA, and widely credited for starting the 3D printing movement in the 1980s. He still serves as the chief technology officer and executive vice-president of the company. 3D Systems is active in a number of AM fields, including aerospace, education, healthcare, arts and entertainment, architecture, energy, and jewellery. Applications for the technology range between content creation and prototyping, end-use parts manufacturing, injection moulding, and generating implantable devices. Visiongain believes that 3D Systems is on track to earn revenue of over $580 million in 2014. Now that the international 3D printing market is expanding, new, competitive technologies are being developed, and technological patents are set to expire, 3D Systems will need to find an effective strategy to cement its lead in this space. 6.1.1 Building Strengths with Partnerships One of 3D Systems’ main strengths is its extensive partner and international reseller network. Most notably, in May 2014, 3D Systems partnered with ScanSource Inc., a leading international value- added distributor of specialty technology products. Under their agreement, 3D Systems would benefit largely from ScanSource's new technologies team dedicated to the sale and support of 3D printing solutions. Whereas 3D printing has been a niche market for the first two decades of its existence, it is beginning to move into a growth period along a regular adoption curve. The partnership with ScanSource denotes a shift in 3D Systems’ strategy reflecting this change in the market; they are optimising their reseller channel and trying to hit the greatest possible number of verticals and sub- markets. Outside of the high-technology market, 3D Systems has also forged a partnership with Hershey chocolate. While it may not have the same tech industry clout as their partnership with ScanSource, however Hershey is the largest chocolate producer in the United States, a $18 billion total market size. Globally, Hershey revenue is in excess of $1 billion annually, out of a global market size of over $90 billion. This partnership between Hershey and 3D Systems has yet to yield any tangible products, but visiongain believes chocolate is a large, reliable market with 3% annual growth and the greater potential applications for 3D printing in the food industry are vast.
