The presentation shows how the Viewpoints team have developed the Information Skills theme for their interactive workshops, and describes how Ulster librarians can get involved in delivering information skills workshops using our resources.

Viewpoints Overview <ul><li>Aim: to create user-friendly reflective tools to promote and enhance effective curriculum design. </li></ul><ul><li>The tools will help staff consider areas such as: </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>information skills/information literacy, </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>assessment and feedback, </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>learner engagement and </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>creativity in the curriculum </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>while considering the learner perspective </li></ul></ul>
    3. 4. F2F Workshop format <ul><li>Allows teams to share ideas around course design </li></ul><ul><li>Using large learner timeline worksheet and A6 cards </li></ul><ul><li>Teams choose principles, map them to student timeline, select examples and write own ideas on timeline </li></ul>
    4. 5. Information Skills Theme <ul><li>1 of 4 workshop themes </li></ul><ul><li>Aim – to get staff thinking about students’ information literacy needs (e.g. research/study skills) for a module/course </li></ul><ul><li>Librarians can use these cards / workshop resources with staff </li></ul>
    5. 6. Pedagogical background <ul><li>7 principles – based on SCONUL Seven Pillars </li></ul><ul><li>Examples on the back of cards are adapted from Information Skills Benchmarks , a paper by Peter Godwin from the LIS </li></ul>

Information Skills - revisions <ul><li>Librarians involved throughout revision process </li></ul><ul><li>August 2009 - presented initial concepts to Subject Librarians </li></ul><ul><li>Autumn 2009 – individual consultations with librarians – card content </li></ul><ul><li>March 2010 – interactive workshop with draft cards at Librarian Subject meeting </li></ul><ul><li>Throughout 2009/2010 – piloting cards with course teams in Ulster </li></ul><ul><li>Summer 2010 – new ideas for cards on Information Skills Ning social network </li></ul><ul><li>February/March 2011 – final revisions from ADL team and librarians </li></ul>

Key changes made to Information Skills theme <ul><li>Meaning of some of the principles was unclear to some users so wording was changed to clarify meaning </li></ul><ul><li>Descriptions of principles on the front of cards was made simpler </li></ul><ul><li>Examples on the back of the cards were clarified and brought up to date with current library practice </li></ul><ul><li>“ Too much information” – cards summarised and simplified </li></ul><ul><li>Duplications on different cards removed </li></ul><ul><li>Examples grouped in a more logical way </li></ul><ul><li>Layout made easier to read </li></ul><ul><li>Branding and Creative Commons copyright added </li></ul>

Simplified principles – easier to understand <ul><li>Define the task and understand the topic </li></ul><ul><li>Identify appropriate resources </li></ul><ul><li>Search effectively </li></ul><ul><li>Find and extract information </li></ul><ul><li>Compare and analyse information </li></ul><ul><li>Organise and share information ethically </li></ul><ul><li>Interpret information and create new content </li></ul>

Next steps <ul><li>To embed these workshops in the University to help course teams </li></ul><ul><li>Librarians central to this process – delivering Information Skills sessions to lecturers – using our materials as prompts </li></ul>Workshop format and Information Skills theme are both complete

Other uses of our resources <ul><li>Librarians/course staff could use cards with students, to show them information literacy concepts </li></ul><ul><li>Help learners to understand the skills that they have to develop, and specific examples of how to develop them (e.g. using software like Refworks to manage references) </li></ul>

How to hold a Viewpoints workshop <ul><li>Viewpoints have written a Handbook – to explain to staff how to use our reflective resources </li></ul><ul><li>This will give academics the information they need to run a Viewpoints course design workshop with their team </li></ul><ul><li>Librarians can use the Handbook for ideas/hints on running an Information Skills workshop </li></ul>

Information Literacy, our resources and you <ul><li>Viewpoints are supplying 10 sets of module-level Information Skills cards to the Library (course-level printed cards to follow) </li></ul><ul><li>Once extras are printed we will give the Library 3 sets of the A0 size laminated student worksheets – in the meantime you can borrow worksheets from Viewpoints if required </li></ul><ul><li>You can have your own information literacy workshops for staff or students if desired, using the Handbook and cards as a guide </li></ul><ul><li>Use the card resources creatively – as prompts, to invite debate, to discuss information skills load in a course, to get students to consider information literacy. You will have your own ideas on how to best use cards </li></ul>
