  • Key Points The purpose of this presentation is to provide a brief introduction to Curriculum for Excellence and the potential of Glow to support it. This presentation in no way is intended to provided detailed information about CfE but rather to look at the key concepts and ideas of CfE and how they relate to Glow and your own current classroom practice.
  • Scotland is leading the way Linking all our young people and providing access wherever theer is an internet connection.
  • Scotland is leading the way Linking all our young people and providing access wherever theer is an internet connection.
  • These are some of the elements which are available though Glow. There are lots of ways to Collaborate. The use of Glow groups and communication tools. Glow Learn is the VLE where we can search for resources create a set of activities, allocate these to pupils and monitor and mark their progress. Other elements such as Secure File transfer etc will add to what can be achieved using Glow.

  • Although Glow is using the technology. It is about teaching and not about the technology
  • Scottish Executive’s Ambitious, Excellent Schools agenda is the biggest Scottish Education reform programme for a generation. CfE is central to this reform and at the heart of this is the programme of work reviewing the current curriculum. The key aims of CfE are to provide: Glow will deliver many of the materials, tools and CPD that will be required to see Curriculum for Excellence become reality.

  • Underpinning all of CfE are the four capacities. Curriculum for Excellence aims to focus classroom practice upon the child and around the four capacities of education. The four capacities of CfE Successful Learners Confident Individuals Responsible Citizens Effective Contributors
  • The child is at the centre of this diagram, and our aspiration for each child is represented through the four capacities which surround the child. By using Glow are definitely developing the capacity of Successful Learners who can use the technology for learning. By trying to create a variety of learning experiences By using Glow to exemplify the purposes of Curriculum for Excellence. We can see that by creating a variety of learning experiences we also hope to develop enthusiasm and motivation for learning. Glow obviously allows children to use technology for learning. Being able to personalise and manage their own learning at a time, place and making best use of resources will enable young people to become Confident individuals. By showing respect for others when using Glow Meet, Glow chat, discussion forums to communicate and collaborate with very much supports the capacity of Responsible Citizens. The children need to be able to communicate in various ways using Glow, to their peers, adults and children older and younger than them. Use of Glow groups will allow pupils to work in partnership and in teams.

  • One of the 7 principles of Curriculum for Excellence is Challenge and Enjoyment. The following three quotes are from Primary 6 pupils who were using Glow to share ideas and develop their understanding of the novel they were reading in class. There was no bribery and corruption involved – this was what the children thought about using Glow.
