  • 2. Childhood Alexander Isayevich was born on December 11st, 1918 in Kislovodsk, in the family of cossacks. His father was killed in the hunt six months before the birth of his son. Alexander's mother was from the family of a wealthy landowner.
  • 3. Solzhenitsyn entered Rostov University. In October 1941 he was joined the army. Initially he was just a soldier, and then became a lieutenant. In 1943 he received the Order of the Patriotic War of the second degree and the next - the Order of the Red Star
  • 4. 1945 In February 1945, for criticizing the actions of Joseph Stalin in personal letters Alexander Solzhenitsyn was arrested and sentenced to 8 years of forced labor camps.
  • 5. 1953 In February 1953 was released without the right of residence in the European part of the USSR and he was sent to permament exile(1953-1956); he lived in the village of Kok-Terek Jambul Region. In February 1956 the Supreme Court of the USSR rehabilitated Alexander Solzhenitsyn and he moved to Ryazan. There he worked as a mathematics teacher.
  • 6. In September 1965 Solzhenitsyn’s archive got into the State Security Committee and the publication of his works in the USSR was discontinued. In November 1969 Solzhenitsyn was expelled from the Union of Writers. In 1970, Alexander Solzhenitsyn won the Nobel Prize.
  • 7. In 1974, after the publication in Paris a book The Gulag Archipelago dissident writer was arrested. February 12, 1974 held court Alexander Solzhenitsyn was convicted of high treason, stripped of his citizenship and sentenced to expulsion from the USSR the next day.
  • 8. Despite the fact that Solzhenitsyn lived for about 20 years in the U.S., he did not ask for the U.S. citizenship. He criticized both the Soviet order and American reality. During 20 years of exile in Germany, the USA and in France he published a lot of works. In the USSR, Solzhenitsyn began to be published in the late 1980s.
  • 9. In August 1990, by presidential decree of the USSR Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s Soviet citizenship was restored. In 1990 for his book The Gulag Archipelago Solzhenitsyn was awarded the State Prize. In May 1994 the writer returned to Russia. In 1997 he was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Russian Federation.
