This could be the most important exercise you go through for your business this year.
When marketing, online OR offline, it can be tempting to market to anyone and everyone in sight, with the mentality
that you’ll “catch some fish in your net”.
Whilst the fish analogy is true, you’ll waste precious time, energy and money marketing to large numbers of people
, when the reality is that most people simply don’t want what you’re selling!
Identifying your target market with clarity allows you to aim your marketing at a much smaller group, thus meaning
you are far more likely to get a direct hit!
AND target marketing to a pre- identified group of people is a lot easier when it comes to converting them into
paying customers, because they actually want or need what you’re selling!
In t his exercise I’m going cover;
Target Market Analysis : who is your t arget market ?
Discover with absolute clarity, who is your perfect customer or client. Who is it, that if they hear your message will
buy everything you’re selling?!
Market ing channels : where t o f ind t hem?
Where are they hanging out – you want your message right in front of them.
Types of market ing : how t o market t o t hem.
2. Learn how to speak their language, build rapport and convert them into customers/clients.
First let’s identify YOUR target market (get out a pen and notepad!)
Who Are They?
They are;
A. People who NEED your product!
Make a list of their qualities. Be as specific as possible.
Think about their age, income, gender, interests, family make up, geographical location. What are they reading,
where are they working, what do they do for entertainment?
Remember they are the people most likely to buy from you, NOT the people you would like to sell to!
They are most likely NOT your family and friends – best way to have family and friends running from the hills is to
pitch them 24/7!

Your current and past customers/client
Make a list of the attributes of your current or past customers and how they found you. If you don’t know, ask them.
Use online surveys for free.
C.
Your competitors customers and clients
Snoop on your competitors blogs and social media sites (hey, all is free in love and business right?!) See where
their customers are coming from and what sort of demographic they are.
You can get an idea of who their customers are and what they want but looking at their keywords. One way to find
this out is to use Google Keyword Planner: put in your competitors website (AKA landing page) to see a list of
keywords their customers are using to find them online.
Where t o f ind t hem
Now that you have a clear picture of who they are, you need to know where they are. Make a list of places they are
likely to frequent, for example;
Forums and chat rooms
Face book groups
Your competitors’ social media pages
3. Industry specific events
Blogs
On your own email list or database
A certain demographic area
The list goes on – try to come up with as many places as possible. Think out side t he square!
How To Market To Them
With a clear picture of WHO they are and WHERE they are, you can know go about getting your message in front of
them.
The best way to get the attention and loyalty from a target group is to give them consistent VALUE.
With your target market clearly in mind ask yourself;
What do they want?
What are their frustrations?
What are the solutions?
Give them the solutions (FREE VALUE) in the form of information, reviews, trainings, resources, free giveaways,
advise, relevant entertainment etc. to build a loyal customer base.
You can give this value in the form of blog posts, direct emailing, direct mail, social media advertising (paid and
unpaid), social media/forum posting & chat.
