Websters New World College
Dictionary
Great Reference
Is legislator pronounced with an er sound at the end or an or? Is the
Jewish festival of lights spelled Chanukah, Hanuka, or Hanukkah? With
Websters New World College Dictionary, which promises to describe
rather than prescribe, you can take your pick. The dictionary includes
more than 150,000 entries, including brief biographical and geographical
notes and useful drawings and diagrams (depictions of four kinds of
buoys, for example). The guide to pronunciation and symbols is given on
every other page, handy for those who dont like to refer to the inside cover
each time they forget how to pronounce the sound of the schwa (of
course, the guides on the inside and front covers are more extensive).
Starred words refer to Americanisms, which number more than 11,000,
such as hornswoggle and Hopi and kitchenette. The definitions
themselves are clear and simple and seldom have you scurrying to
another page for a definition of the definition. Easy to use and understand,
Websters New World College Dictionary is a fine addition to any high
school or college students desk set. --Rebecca A. Staffel
Personal Review: Websters New World College Dictionary
I've been using this dictionary for nearly 60 years and I can tell you from
personal and professional experience that it is the dictionary of choice.
First of all, it's loaded with information. More than 1,700 pages are packed
into the volume, boasting some 300,000 definitions. The definitions are
clear and precise, listing alternate definitions for various uses. It's one of
the few dictionaries that maintains several pages that explain how the
entries work. It's the official dictionary of the Associated Press.
It seems to me that the New World is the final authority of words and their
definitions of words of the English language and unlike its competitor, the
Oxford, the New World is slanted to American usage, although it clarifies
cases where words behave differently in Great Britain. It's kept up to date
regularly, which makes it a current authority on language.
What's important as a reference book is not who makes it or what that
publisher's reputation is, but rather how practical the reference work is to
use and how useful it can be as a resource. What's important must
answer the question of how useful the work is as a reference book.
