In my opinion, "Wake Up, Sir!" isn't really laugh-out-loud funny. There are no slapstick Three Stooges stuff going on, or excessive Monty Python surrealism going around. What makes this novel funny are the commentaries and observation that the main character, Alan Blair, makes with the things that surround him. He comments on science fiction, homosexuality, Judaism (he's Jewish himself), sex, eye patches, noses, etc. There are tons of things that he observes and reflects on. Plus, there are some ridiculous situations that he gets himself into. I'm not going to tell you what actually happens. I will tell you that this makes me want to read/watch the Wodehouse novels/television series. There is indeed a valet named Jeeves, but there's some interesting history to that.
So I did enjoy the book, but in a different way. I didn't literally laugh out loud while reading this, but I still enjoyed it for its strange atmosphere. Jeeves and Blair (along with Ava, Tiknle, Mangrove, Beabien, etc.) make such a delightful novel.
