Wake Up, Sir!: A Novel by Jonathan Ames - Presentation Transcript

    1. Wake Up, Sir!: A Novel by Jonathan Ames Single-Handedly Restores My Faith In The Publishing Industry Alan Blair, the hero of Wake Up, Sir!, is a young, loony writer with numerous problems of the mental, emotional, sexual, spiritual, and physical variety. Hes very good at problems. But luckily for Alan, he has a personal valet named Jeeves, who does his best to sort things out for his troubled master. And Alan does find trouble wherever he goes. He embarks on a perilous and bizarre road journey, his destination being an artists colony in Saratoga Springs. There Alan encounters a gorgeous femme fatale who is in possession of the most spectacular nose in the history of noses. Such a nose can only lead to a wild disaster for someone like Alan, and Jeeves tries to help him, but...Well, read the book and find out! Personal Review: Wake Up, Sir!: A Novel by Jonathan Ames In my opinion, "Wake Up, Sir!" isn't really laugh-out-loud funny. There are no slapstick Three Stooges stuff going on, or excessive Monty Python
    2. surrealism going around. What makes this novel funny are the commentaries and observation that the main character, Alan Blair, makes with the things that surround him. He comments on science fiction, homosexuality, Judaism (he's Jewish himself), sex, eye patches, noses, etc. There are tons of things that he observes and reflects on. Plus, there are some ridiculous situations that he gets himself into. I'm not going to tell you what actually happens. I will tell you that this makes me want to read/watch the Wodehouse novels/television series. There is indeed a valet named Jeeves, but there's some interesting history to that. So I did enjoy the book, but in a different way. I didn't literally laugh out loud while reading this, but I still enjoyed it for its strange atmosphere. Jeeves and Blair (along with Ava, Tiknle, Mangrove, Beabien, etc.) make such a delightful novel.
