To determine if your hard drive is an IDE drive or a SATA drive, please
look for the connectors. An IDE connector is longer, and has two rows of
pins that stick out.
A SATA connector is smaller and has two plastic tabs with flat metal
contacts.

I bought three of these. I use them when I find a laptop with a bad
motherboard or display that can't be fixed. I pop the hard drive into one of
these and instant data recovery.

They have an extra USB connector in case you do not have a USB 2.0. I
assume that allows it to get enough power to operate but so far I haven't
needed it.
