Thunder Cake Revisited
Grandma consoles her frightened granddaughter by telling her that the
dark clouds of the impending storm are nothing more than the ingredients
for a Thunder Cake. Reprint. AB. SLJ.
Personal Review: Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco
When my now 16 and 18 year-old grandchildren were small, Thunder
Cake was one of their favorite stories, but somewhere along the way the
book was misplaced. Of the younger group, one grandson is frightened of
storms, so I gratefully found and purchased Thunder Cake for him. This
story, combined with matter-of-fact attitudes in those around him, has
helped him to overcome his fear. Nellie Peck Hen was a favorite of the
older kids (we have real chickens as well as a chicken theme in the
kitchen)and one of my "kitchen chickens" continues to be called Nellie by
the kids. We have baked the Thunder Cake from the recipe in the book
and it is a hit, especially when it is brought out immediately after reading
the story. We're building our own memories as we go!
