How To Build A School, Or 55 Schools...
The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his
humanitarian campaign to use education to combat terrorism in the
Talibans backyard. Anyone who despairs of the individuals power to
change lives has to read the story of Greg Mortenson, a homeless
mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistans treacherous K2, was
inspired by a chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and
promised to build them a school. Over the next decade he built fifty-five
schools especially for girls that offer a balanced education in one of the
most isolated and dangerous regions on earth. As it chronicles Mortensons
quest, which has brought him into conflict with both enraged Islamists and
uncomprehending Americans, Three Cups of Tea combines adventure
with a celebration of the humanitarian spirit.
Personal Review: Three Cups of Tea: One Mans Mission to
Fight Terrorism and Build Nations . . . One School at a Time by
Greg Mortenson
No wonder this book is wildly popular! In 1993, mountaineer, Greg
Mortenson, failed in his attempt to climb K2. Lost and alone he wandered
into an impoverished village in the high mountains of Pakistan where he
was kindly treated by the people there who had nothing. As he got to
know them, he realized their great desire for learning, and he promised to
return and build them a school. The story of Greg's determination in spite
of overwhelming odds in raising the money and the logistics of getting
supplies and materials into the mountains is a page-turner of drama,
extreme danger, and even romance. This timely book is a look behind the
headlines and into the hearts of people. This one man could never have
survived and succeeded without a good heart and noble spirit, and a hero's
determination in a land with the Taliban. An inspiring story! For a very
different though inspiring fiction story, also recommend: ARROWS
