The Geography of Bliss: One Grumps Search for the Happiest Places in the World by Eric Weiner - Presentation Transcript

    1. The Geography of Bliss: One Grumps Search for the Happiest Places in the World by Eric Weiner Loved It! Part foreign affairs discourse, part humor, and part twisted self-help guide, The Geography of Bliss takes the reader from America to Iceland to India in search of happiness, or, in the crabby authors case, moments of un- unhappiness. The book uses a beguiling mixture of travel, psychology, science and humor to investigate not what happiness is, but where it is. Are people in Switzerland happier because it is the most democratic country in the world? Do citizens of Qatar, awash in petrodollars, find joy in all that cash? Is the King of Bhutan a visionary for his initiative to calculate Gross National Happiness? Why is Asheville, North Carolina so damn happy? With engaging wit and surprising insights, Eric Weiner answers those questions and many others, offering travelers of all moods some interesting new ideas for sunnier destinations and dispositions. (2007)
    2. Personal Review: The Geography of Bliss: One Grumps Search for the Happiest Places in the World by Eric Weiner I woke my husband with my uncontrolled laughter when reading about Slough. I learned a lot about the "science" of happiness (do you believe we do research on happiness?) as I have pondered the thought of happiness and what it means. I got depressed reading about Moldova, the least happy country according to the World Database of Happiness. (Eric says just the name sounds melancholy...."Moldoooova" and I agree). I found many interesting and not usually discussed or reported facts about the countries he visited. I read the book on my Kindle and felt I got a shot of endorphins (happiness chemicals) each night as I read it. Fun. Entertaining. Recommended it to several friends but couldn't lend it to them as it was on my Kindle....alas. I will recommend it to my book club.
