A friend told me about this book, which is why I read it. This is definitely
for the "younger crowd" - not the hidebound Women's Studies oldsters like
me - but the post MTV generation so used to flashes of music/art/ideas.
The fast-paced, snappy, and very funny delivery and word use is so
current and appealing.
Of course it is a subversive document, the casual observer may actually
think it is all about marriage, while the non-casual reader can easily
discern a feminist tract presented with wit and verve. This is certainly the
way to present the "feminist" point of view to the Modern Gurrll who does
NOT want to be considered an unfeminine (hairy or man-hating) female.
The authors are right on track - in a generation raised on Bush and more
Bush and no substance but lots of flash - this is truly the only way to bring
them in.
The authors may not have written this book to subvert those backlashed
Barbies, but by the light of Gloria Steinem, that Click moment of the Ms.
era will be hitting a whole lot more of an audience then anything Gloria or
Germaine Greer or so many others were saying, way back when.
I can not imagine that this would not be a required book for Women's
Studies courses, although they are now often called Human Studies or
some such hogwash. At the least, it is a great follow-up read for those of
us who have been working the "third shift" and who have not kept up on
the latest info (like the history & evolution of machines supporting women's
health).
It is a 5-star read.
