This book is not what I expected, that's for sure. It is definitely a wake-up call for me. I'm not sure how much I liked the chapters on "You are what you eat" which goes into animal abuse and things like that. It was quite hard to stomach and even got a little nauseous since I'd just eaten a cheeseburger. If you're not interested in becoming a vegan or are an extreme animal lover, I'd recommend skipping that chapter. I know I skipped numerous pages.
However, the reason I chose to give it 5 stars is because it really does give TONS of good advise of things that are and aren't healthy for you to be eating. If you're really interested in living an extremely healthy lifestyle, this is a great resource (one resource). It teaches you to read a food label, what to look for, what to pass up in the super market, etc...
As someone who already leans towards vegetarianism (although not 100%), I thought I was doing a pretty good job. I went back to my cupboards and looked at multiple food labels. Things that I had picked out of the healthy, organic section of the super market were definitely good foods. I was impressed by some organic chips and oatmeal after reading the labels and the book. However, I found multiple things that weren't as healthy as I'd thought.
I don't know that I'll follow this book 100%, but I do really love it and plan to use it as a resource. I plan on checking out some of the non dairy cheeses and things that they recommend. It's all about reading the label, if it doesn't seem any healthier than regular dairy cheese, I might stick with eating dairy.
Overall, fantastic read. I read it in less than a day. Skip the chapter on you are what you eat, UNLESS you are interested in learning about how animals are treated in slaughterhouses or you are interested in becoming a vegan. I guarantee you, you won't have an appetite for meat or dairy anytime soon.
