Personal Review: Signing Time Volume 1: My First Signs DVD starring Rachel de Azevedo Coleman, Alex Brown, Leah Coleman I initially bought another (different) signing video and was extremely disappointed, however Signing Time rocks! I have a group of 1 to 3 year olds who have managed to acquire a sign language vocabulary of over 30 words in only 2 weeks! We watch the video together because I do not know sign language either and the host of the show, Rachel explains sentence construction and fingerspelling and the basics of signing with her color-coded fingertips. Rachel makes it very entertaining and the children and I enjoy the time we set aside to view the video and we reinforce the words during the class day. I have a one year old who just waves her hands around whenever she sees the video and has had purposeful hand gestures indicating she wants an apple or is hungry! I have a three year old whose favorite sign is "Help me!" What is particularly exciting is that the children have begun spontaneously signing during the course of the day!I highly recommend this series of videos! There are none better for an introduction (and beyond) to sign language. The children in my childcare are all hearing children and I believe that the combination of movement (hand signs) with learning words and a different way of communicating can promote neuron development in the brain thereby making it easier to recall information and increase memory for a better transition to symbol recognition and sight words. In pre-verbal children it can ease communication problems and help with tantrums.
