The Good: Oh my freakin' goodness, what can I say about this book that hasn't been said before?! The characters are amazingly real, the writing is pitch-perfect, and it just resonated with me. It is truly awesome and even when I'm old and on my death bed, I will still remember this book.
I loved how unique this novel was even though it dealt with an age old question: What is true beauty?
Terra was relatable and when she had her triumphs, I wanted to run down the streets and cheer. When she had her falls, I just wanted to give her a hug (even though she'd think I was a total psycho). She was just a wonderful character to read about.
One of my favorite attributes about this book is the relationship between Jacob and Terra. If Jacob from North of Beautiful and Jacob from Twilight (never heard of it? You're my type of person.) appeared on my doorstep I would just grab the Jacob from North of Beautiful and beg him to be mine while the other one can just suck it.
Yeah, that was a pretty weird example. The point is, I loved his character! You rarely see a relationship between a Caucasian girl and an Asian guy in YA books, and if you do, they're usually not very good. North of Beautiful really raises the bar and makes me even prouder of my heritage.
This review isn't one of my longest and it's not because I don't have anything to say about (I have way too much praise for North of Beautiful!), it's because I have one word to describe this: inspiring.
The Bad: I was left with a lot of questions. What happened to Terra? Will Merc ever stop and smell the roses? Where did Claudius go (because one minute he was there and the next he wasn't!)? Will Terra's dad ever stop being a huge jerk? Will everyone get what they deserve? Will anyone have a happy ending?
There are sooo many questions left unanswered and it's killing me! So, that deterred me from fully loving this book.
Overall: North of Beautiful is a fantastic and thought-provoking read that will leave you more wiser and understanding. I could not get enough of this book and I think everyone, regardless if your self-esteem is off the charts or barely there, should read this book. It will be one of the best things you'll ever do.
