Personal Review: Making Content Comprehensible for English Learners: The SIOP Model (3rd Edition) by Deborah J. Short This book was required reading for a class I took on teaching English Language Learners (ELLs) using the SIOP, Sheltered English, instructional method. I found the book to be an EXCELLENT resource. It uses a very clear and structured approach to demonstrate how classroom teachers can incorporate research-based practices into their instruction to support learning for their ELL students or, in fact, any students that are having difficulty learning course content. The book provides many suggestions for practices that make content accessible and interesting to learn for students. It provides scenarios in each chapter showing how classroom teachers have incorporated these practices throughout their lessons. After I began using some of the practices with a 6-grade beginning English speaker, he finally started making real progress in learning. I recommend this book to anyone teaching ELL students.
