I, Avatar: The Culture and Consequences of Having a Second Life (New Riders) by Mark Stephen Meadows - Presentation Transcript

    1. I, Avatar: The Culture and Consequences of Having a Second Life (New Riders) by Mark Stephen Meadows First Rate On Second Life What is an avatar? Why are there nearly a billion of them, and who is using them? Do avatars impact our real lives, or are they just video game conceits? Is an avatar an inspired rendering of its creator’s inner self, or is it just one among millions of anonymous vehicles clogging the online freeways? Can we use our avatars to really connect with people, or do they just isolate us? And as we become more like our avatars do they become more like us?
    2. In I, Avatar, Mark Stephen Meadows answers some of these questions, but more importantly, he raises hundreds of others in his exploration of avatars and the fascinating possibilities they hold. His examination of avatars through the lenses of sociology, psychology, politics, history, and art, he will change the way you look at even a simple online profile and revolutionize the idea of avatars as part of our lives, whether first or second. Personal Review: I, Avatar: The Culture and Consequences of Having a Second Life (New Riders) by Mark Stephen Meadows This is the perfect book for anyone who wants to know what it really feels like to live in Second life. Meadows does a terrific job of capturing the emotions, psychology and sociology of this virtual world and what the technology will bring to that experience in the future. It's also an insightful and personal tour of SL which gives you a sense of how immersive and involving it becomes. There are a number of guide books to sl out there but this is the first I've read that not only gives you the broad implications but the individual reflections and insights as well. Meadows has seen it all in sl and tells the story well. Among other things, he also provides a smart reading list for further understanding and exploration. That's how I discovered the book Synthetic Worlds by Castronova -- another excellent book. Now, go make your avatar and have fun.
