Okay, I admit that I am somewhat lacking in enthusiasm for household cleaning. Now this does not mean that I am a dirty person, far from it. As a matter of fact I am a wee bit of the picky side when it comes to clean. I am though, a very cluttered person. The clutter I can live with...my wife hates it with a passion, but I am what I am and I doubt at this point in my life I will change. But back to the clean obsession. My problem here is that I am also a bit of a lazy person and I am also a bit of a cheap person. I do not like spending energy when it is not necessary and I do not like spending money when it is not necessary. I also happen to be a person who has been married for over 47 years to a woman whose attitude is...everyone does their share! Cheap, lazy, likes a clean house and am more or less forced to fend for myself...do you see my problem?
Well, I have had this particular book for around four years now. I received it via air as it flew though the air and landed on my stomach as I was taking one of my much deserved naps. Yup, receive a copy of Haley's Cleaning Hints as a strong hint.
I must say that this book has been worth every penny my wife paid for it...what ever it was at the time. It is absolutely filled with time and money saving hints for cleaning just about everything you can imagine around the house. The neat thing here is that most of the stuff used in cleaning which this book recommends is already in the home. Take vinegar: This stuff cleans appliances, bathtubs, chrome, carpets, clothes, crystal, drains, faucets, furniture, garbage disposers, humidifiers, kettles, laundry, paintbrushes, showers, stains, toilet bowls and a whole lot of other stuff. Then there is shaving cream! This stuff is good for stains such as blood, chocolate, coffee, ketchup, pet accidents, soot, spaghetti sauce, tea and just about anything else you can think of from our carpets.
As an example, the author gives us hundreds of uses for baking soda, vinegar, borax, hair spray, salt, aluminum foil, shaving cream, ammonia, water softener, waterless hand cleaner, toothpaste, club soda, cola, cornstarch, dental floss...good grief, the list goes on and on. All of these mixtures and concoctions are found in most households and are readily available.
In addition to the products and their various uses, the author has filled this book with hundreds of "how to do it" tips and procedures. The directions are easy to follow, even for a dolt like me.
This work has saved me time and it has saved me money, and it has made my wife happy. Folks, life does not get much better than this.
Now this book has not helped the clutter problem although the author most certainly addresses the philosophy, methods and advantages of a well organized house, garage and office. I suppose that if a person were so inclined not to live in the center of clutter, the book would be as helpful in this area as it is in keeping the place clean.
