Fantasy Workshop: Mastering Digital
Painting Techniques by ImagineFX
Well Written
As computer-based drawing and painting programs become more
sophisticated, the audience for fantasy art keeps growing along with it.
Produced in association with the renowned magazine ImagineFX, this
visually striking guide helps readers learn how to produce top-quality digital
fantasy images in styles ranging from manga to gothic. Focusing on a
small number of popular creative painting programs, this workshop
includes plenty of step-by-step screen grabs and simple, detailed
instructions. Would-be fantasy artists will be able to progress from basic
“pencil” roughs to line art and, ultimately, to finished color pieces. A gallery
of FXpose images includes work by fantasy masters such as Alan Lee,
Todd Lockwood, Jim Burns, Linda Begkvist, and others.
Personal Review: Fantasy Workshop: Mastering Digital Painting
Techniques by ImagineFX
This book is not for beginners. It is best suited to those who already have a
fair degree of mastery in Adobe Photoshop and want to gain new ideas
and techniques from established masters in digital painting, in fantasy,
science fiction and even advanced Manga artforms.
The book is written in separate "chapters", each written by a different
digital artist and following the creation of a piece of digital art from start to
finish. I found the creative ideas of each piece inspiring and techniques
used to create them extremely useful. In my view, the best way to use the
book is to flick through it, find the project that best approximates to the
image or effect you want to create and then follow the well-illustrated, step-
by-step guide to how that piece of digital art was done.
I found it good value for money and a source of inspiration and assistance
that I keep close at hand for my own work.
