I just completed Boy's Life and I was very impressed, with the elegance that McCammon put this semi-autobiographical novel. Again like Swan's Song versus The Stand, Boys Life is like The Body or to most the film basis for Stand By Me. Boy's life however goes much further and adds that feeling of magical times as a kid, riding dirt trails with your friends, dealing with the town bully, the bitchy teacher in grammer school, and just the general feeling of socialness that people showed in a Tupper Party or Avon way back in the 50's, 60's and 70's. This was a beautifully written novel, and one I CAN'T believe isn't a film. I would love to this story on the big screen, it will be one to be remembered.
In a nut shell it is the story of a boy in a year of his life, it starts off with a murder mystery and along the way we are shown vingettes of Cory's life and his interaction with the local towns folk. This novel has it all, the local color describing the smells, tastes, feel and mannerism of people from a time long ago. It has Gunslingers, a Lochness Monster, murder, adventure, mystery, family loves and spirit. And in the end we find out who the killer is and why they did it, how can you go wrong. Many people will think the novel has a loose plot and in many ways it does, but don't force it, just let it guide you and just follow along you will be happy in the end. McCammon is one of the nicest writers I know of, his words flow from the page with such fluidity. Read this book, I will recommend it to people.
