I had this book for AP Biology my senior year of high school, and we had to read it from cover to cover. Long story short, I read the book and got a 5 on the AP exam. Our only assignment in the class was to read about 2 chapters per week until we finished in April. It was more than enough preparation for the AP exam. Open response questions seemed ripped verbatim from the book's in-depth examples.
I'm a Biology major now, going into my 3rd year of undergrad, and I've had nothing but success so far. I owe a good part of it to this book here. Granted, it's a 1200 page monster, but it's engaging and causes you to ask questions about the world around you. No book could possibly tell you everything there is to know about biology, but this book provides a solid foundation for just about every area. I've taken courses in Anatomy & Physiology, Ecology, and Cell Biology, to name a few, and much of my success in these very different courses stemmed from what I had already learned by thoroughly reading this book. To many, biology can be confusing. For those that might say "it's all Greek to me," this book will make you fluent.
So in a nutshell, if you you have the motivation and read this book, your success in biology and more advanced biology courses is almost guaranteed.
