Bait by Alex Sanchez
Diego's Story
When a guy in his class looks at him funny, Diego punches him in the face,
and ends up on probation. At first he wants nothing to do with his probation
officer. But as Diego starts to open up, he begins to realize that Mr. Vidas
is the first person in his life who ever really wanted to listen to him. With
Vidass help, Diego begins to make real progress in controlling his anger.
He even opens up enough to tell Vidas about the shark tooth that his
stepfather gave him that he uses to cut himself. But only if Diego can find
the courage to trust Vidas with the darkest secrets from his past will he be
able to heal completely. In this bold story of a boy trying to grow beyond a
painful past, award-winning author Alex Sanchez calls upon his personal
experience as a probation officer to reveal the complexities of one of his
most genuinely realized characters to date.

Diego's Story
Amos Lassen
"Bait" is Alex Sanchez's bold story of a boy trying to get away from his
past; a past that was ever so painful. In this book Alex Sanchez goes into
new areas and they are heartbreaking and courageous at the same time.
Diego has quite a story and it is one that we, the readers, will not likely
forget for quite a while after reading this heroic novel.
Diego punched a guy in the face at school because he looked at him
funny and he finds himself on probation. Being rebellious, he wants
nothing to do with his probation officer at first but with time he learns that
Mr. Vidas is the first person in his life who has ever listened to him and so
Diego begins to open up. This is a path to healing but it will not be
complete until Diego is ready to really talk to Mr. Vidas about his secrets.
Alex Sanchez has done so much for gay youth and this book is
another powerful contribution. As in his previous writings, Sanchez's prose
is clear and his plot is well thought out. I do feel that the character study of
Diego is the best thing that he has written. We watch as Diego matures
before our very eyes and with the help of Mr. Vidas, makes some real
progress in controlling his anger and rage and accepting himself.
We see the author's own experience in working as a probation
officer and we are well aware that he knows what he is writing about. This
is a book that is full of heart and yet has so much for us. As usual with Alex
Sanchez, it is a wonderful reading experience.
