A Long Way from Chicago: A Novel in Stories (Newbery Honor Book) by Richard Peck - Presentation Transcript

    1. A Long Way from Chicago: A Novel in Stories (Newbery Honor Book) by Richard Peck Great Read For All Ages What happens when Joey and his sister, Mary Alice -- two city slickers from Chicago -- make their annual summer visits to Grandma Dowdels seemingly sleepy Illinois town? August 1929: They see their first corpse, and he isnt resting easy. August 1930: The Cowgill boys terrorize the town, and Grandma fights back. August 1931: Joey and Mary Alice help Grandma trespass, poach, catch the sheriff in his underwear, and feed the hungry -- all in one day. And theres more, as Joey and Mary Alice make seven summer trips to Grandmas -- each one funnier than the year before -- in self-contained chapters that readers can enjoy as short stories or take together for a rollicking good novel. In the tradition of American humorists from Mark
    2. Twain to Flannery OConnor, popular author Richard Peck has created a memorable world filled with characters who, like Grandma herself, are larger than life and twice as entertaining. Richard Peck lives in New York City. Personal Review: A Long Way from Chicago: A Novel in Stories (Newbery Honor Book) by Richard Peck A Long Way from Chicago is a great book for you if you like a good entertaining and adventurous story. The book is about a nine year old boy named Joey Dowdel and his seven year old sister, Mary Alice Dowdel. They get forced by their parents to go down to their grandmother's house in a small town in the middle of Illinois where they visit each summer from 1929 through 1942. At first Mary Alice and Joey find it boring going from city life in Chicago to country life, but their grandmother proved them wrong by bringing them on wild and crazy adventures such as trespassing and illegal fishing. Throughout the story grandma can make up a lie for just about anything, but never thinks of the consequences before she does something wrong or illegal. If I could, I would give it ten stars because of all the adventures and grandma's mischief. As soon as you think that grandma can't lie about anything else she does. I thought one of the funniest moments in the book is when grandma enters a cooking contest and tries to win by switching her label with a famous cooks label and still loses. Another funny part when they go fishing and a snake jumps out and Joey faints and Mary Alice doesn't even startle. If you choose to read this book you won't regret it.
