The purpose of a business-education partnership is to link independent filmmakers who need high quality graphic design and marketing design with talented senior visual communications students. Such a partnership is a win-win for filmmakers who need graphics that well-represent their project to investors, distributors and potential cast and crew; to students who need real-world professional experience, portfolio pieces, and recommendations; and to universities and technical schools who want to keep their students motivated and prepared for the job market. Included in this presentation are some of the successful winning student designs, and projects from class assignments. Valerie Michele Oliver (Art Director and Educator) arranged and facilitated partnerships with education institutions for class, or individual independent study.

  • Note that I have used this type of business-education relationship approach for other projects besides those that are film related while serving as a art director and educator. The first step is to approach the chair or head of the graphic design, marketing, or visual communications department to let them know that you are interested in working with a class in a design competition, or with a students who want an independent study. Do this at the beginning of a semester before the students and teachers have set their schedules.

  • If you're an indie filmmaker or producer and need visuals to help make your project look professional, reach out to your alma mater or local colleges. This presentation is proof that they can help you achieve success. Two films in this presentation were accepted to film festivals, received press, received distribution and are available on DVD. I rented 'Zombie Honeymoon' and it was a hoot!

  • 3. Program Overview The purpose of a business-education partnership is to link clients who need design support with talented visual communications students. Included in this presentation are some of the successful winning student designs, and projects from class assignments. In a biz-ed partnership, senior students will engage in a competition and the client will choose the winning design. Clients are under no obligation to use the design, though in the past, all have done so. The winning student designer(s) will get to add the client to their resume, have a client piece for their portfolio, receive a $50 honorarium payment from the client, and will be entitled to use the client as a job reference. Non-winning students will have the experience of working with a client in a design studio simulation, and have a piece created for a client in their portfolio. It’s a win-win situation with benefits for all involved. Local clients may attend meetings in person, and national and international clients participate via teleconferencing.copyright 2012 The Healing Artist Studio 8/2/2012 3
