  5. 5. ISC on E²htb• Made up of 32 International Members from over 11 Countries• Have completed our desk top research in all other bodies carrying out research In this area• Have worked with the most active – Green Energy Centre Dublin, Historic Scotland, English Heritage, Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings• As you will see from the next number of slides we are advanced in understanding the challenges, designing new technology, in carrying out and recording different building types, and now in sharing this information.• We would welcome greater participation and co- operation in our research from China
  6. 6. Understanding the Challenges of our Built Heritage• Periods of Buildings 11th Century to the 20th• Construction Techniques, Styles and Materials• Climatic Differences• Occupier Behaviour.• Physical Impact & Heritage Values
  7. 7. Primary Energy Use
  8. 8. Energy Consumption
  9. 9. Protected or Listed Buildings• Protected Structures or Listed Buildings can be protected through planning• In some cases this fails due to the BER• Many Buildings of Historic and Heritage Value are not Listed and therefore are at risk • We need more Legislative Tools
  10. 10. Directive 2006/32/EC• On Energy End-Use Efficiency, Energy Services & repealing Council Directive 93/76/EEC• This is further to the “Kyoto Commitments”• Most European Countries ratifed it in 2009• Create the BER (Building Energy Rating) or the EPC (Energy Performance Certificate)• If you sell or rent your residence you must have a BER or EPC• Heritage Properties Exempted• We believe this has a negative impact on the built heritage
