What is Gnosis?
The word "gnosis" is derived from the Greek language, and means
"knowledge of an intuitive nature; the intuitive comprehension of
spiritual truths." Gnosis is a knowledge that cannot be arrived at
through books or lectures, but rather through one's own direct
experience of reality. Gnosis is often referred to as knowledge of the
heart, in contrast to knowledge that is obtained through the use of the
The Gnostic teachings contain systems and exercises through which
every aspect of the teachings can be personally verified by each
individual. Gnosis is not just theoretical, but one hundred percent
practical. Through direct experience we surpass the boundaries of belief
and disbelief, since both lead to ignorance. Rather than believing or
disbelieving, accepting or rejecting, the Gnostic personally verifies in a
direct manner the validity of the concepts he or she is studying. This
personal verification leads to true knowledge and comprehension, not
merely an intellectual or theoretical understanding of the teachings.
Through Gnosis one personally learns to experience reality directly,
quell the battle between doubt and belief, and comes to KNOW the
inner TRUTH.
What do the Gnostic Teachings consist of?
The Gnostic teachings consist of a wide variety of esoteric disciplines,
all of which are presented in a very practical manner. Exercises are
given for the student to verify what he or she is learning, so that this
knowledge is experienced directly. The ultimate goal of this doctrine is
for the student to reach complete self-realization through the awakening
of consciousness. The following list includes just a few of the many

  7. 7. FAQs.html subjects that are taught and practiced as part of the Gnostic Doctrine: r Meditation r Gnostic Psychology r Sexual Transmutation and Alchemy r Astral Travel r Kundalini Yoga r Tarot and Kabbalah r Gnostic Anthropology and Cosmology r Gnostic Hermetic Astrology r Gnostic Medicine and Elemental Therapy r Dream Yoga Gnosis is called the Doctrine of the Synthesis, since it synthesizes the most important aspects of all major religions and esoteric systems of past and present in one doctrine. Yet Gnosis is not a derivative of any one of these systems. Gnosis predates all religions and systems, and is not the property of any individual or group. Rather, it is a timeless and perennial knowledge. What is the origin of the Gnostic teaching? Gnosis is the modern form of an ancient system of learning which has existed throughout the history of mans presence on Earth. This wisdom was not made available to the public, but revealed only to those who had the privilege to be initiated into the mysteries. Gnosis was taught in the mystery schools of ancient India, China, Egypt, Greece, Rome, among the ancient Gnostics, the Incas, the Mayans, etc. Intense persecution from religious authorities at various stages throughout history caused the initiates of these mystery schools to disappear from (2 of 9) [12/7/2007 5:56:06 PM]
  8. 8. FAQs.html the public eye. During these times the Gnostic doctrine was not lost, but rather was taught and practiced in secrecy. Later, when the persecutions subsided, Gnosis reemerged once again. At critical times in the history of man, such as the times we live in today, great spiritual masters or avatars appear on the earth to bring humanity key teachings to assist those searching for inner enlightenment or liberation. Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed, Krishna, Moses, and Quetzalcoatl are well known examples of such avatars. The Gnostic doctrine, as taught in Gnostic centers throughout the world today, comes from the teachings, practices, and writings of a modern day avatar , Samael Aun Weor who synthesized the precepts of philosophers, mystics, and adepts from all times into an integrated and comprehensive system of knowledge and instruction. Gnosis, as unveiled by Samael Aun Weor, contains the synthesis of all major esoteric systems throughout the world, both past and present. This doctrine provides a complete and cohesive process whereby any person can awaken consciousness and achieve complete self-realization in one lifetime. What are the Four Pillars of knowledge that Gnosis teaches? A thorough study of Gnosis includes the research and study of the four fundamental branches, or "pillars", of knowledge that have been present in the building of all civilizations, united in one doctrine: ART - a form of positively channeling creative energy; an instrument of communication from other planes of consciousness. One can see the superior expression of ART in sacred architecture (pyramids, temples, etc.), in the paintings and sculptures of the great Masters, and in their inspired music that elevates the human spirit. 9. 9. FAQs.html SCIENCE - used for the investigation of the phenomena of the universe, for the discovery of the profound meaning of these phenomena, and to unite theory with practice, the intellectual experience with direct experience. Gnostic science serves to transform the conditions in which we live. PHILOSOPHY - the study of a philosophy different from the New World model; it is the profound study of Initiatic Philosophy and the rediscovery of its esoteric roots. MYSTICISM - the relationship of Man with the Divine, including techniques by which the individual can discover the true purpose of his existence and work consciously towards that final Liberation. It is said that as Man approaches the Divine, the Divine approaches Man. What is Self-Realization and the Three Factors for the Revolution of Consciousness? The main objective of the Gnostic esoteric work is the attainment of Self-Realization. Gnosis offers the complete system by which any individual may attain Self-Realization in one lifetime. The term self-realization has often been misunderstood, and has been defined differently by various esoteric systems. In Gnosis Self-Realization is something extraordinary - it is defined as "the complete and harmonious development of all the infinite possibilities within man". The importance of Self-Realization, of "realizing your own Self", is summarized in the ancient saying, "In you is hidden the treasure of treasures. Oh, man, know thyself and you will know the Universe and the Gods." (4 of 9) [12/7/2007 5:56:06 PM]
  10. 10. FAQs.html Gnosis teaches that self-realization can be accomplished only through the practice of the three factors for the revolution of consciousness. First Factor: The discovery and elimination of those psychological elements within each of us, those elements that hinder spiritual progress and keep us from living our life to the fullest. Since it deals with psychological change through the elimination of such inharmonious elements, the First Factor is called Death. Second Factor : The awakening of consciousness, of virtues, of the latent powers and faculties of our Inner Being. Since it deals with awakening and creation, the Second Factor is called Birth. Third Factor : Making the knowledge of how to reach self-realization available to all those who are searching and yearning for such knowledge. Since this process entails voluntary sacrifice for humanity, the Third Factor is called Sacrifice. The founders of all great religions, and all initiates who attained self-realization by practicing the systems of these Masters, successfully worked with the Three Factors for the Revolution of Consciousness. The Three Factors form the cornerstone, the foundation on which the entire Gnostic Doctrine is built. Will the Gnostic teachings interfere with my religious beliefs? Gnosis does not condemn any religion, but rather teaches that all religions play a vital role in the process of humanity. Gnostic students today come from all types of religious backgrounds. Studying Gnosis, therefore, will help you comprehend the deeper significance of the various aspects of your religion - the esoteric aspects. This will in turn give you a much greater understanding and appreciation of your religion and its practices. Being part of an established religion, however, is not a prerequisite for the Gnostic studies. (5 of 9) [12/7/2007 5:56:06 PM]
  11. 11. FAQs.html What sets apart Gnosis from other similar groups? Often, other groups focus on one or only a few aspects of esoteric knowledge. Some concern themselves with the development of psychic and mental powers, others devote themselves to meditation and the experience of enlightenment, and still others are concerned with astral travel, kabbalah, astrology, etc. The Gnostic teachings, however, encompass a vast array of knowledge. Gnosis has been termed as the Doctrine of the Synthesis since it brings together the most important and profound aspects - the inner essence - of all religions and esoteric systems. The best and most useful aspects of all religions and all bodies of knowledge can be found in Gnosis. The Gnostic teachings are so vast and profound that it cannot be found in any other system. In fact, much of this knowledge has been taught secretly throughout the ages in hidden schools of mysteries scattered around the world. Another difference between Gnosis and many other similar groups is the emphasis on practical applications and exercises. Within the Gnostic doctrine there is an enormous amount of exercises, literally hundreds, that are taught and practiced so that you may verify every aspect of the teaching through direct personal experience. Theoretical study alone is extremely limiting - the authentic seeker of knowledge must investigate personally and directly everything that he is taught so that he or she can make this knowledge real and alive within. How long will it be before I see any changes in my life because of practicing Gnosis? You will start seeing changes is your life almost immediately. Just as a child sees the world differently and with awe when it learns something new, so too will you begin to see yourself and your relationship with others in a different light. You will begin to see that your life acquires a different flavor, since new knowledge brings about new ways of thinking and seeing the world. In a short time, this constant inflow of (6 of 9) [12/7/2007 5:56:06 PM]
  12. 12. FAQs.html new knowledge will help you cope with problems and situations in your life much more effectively. You will find yourself prospering spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and materially. It is important to note, however, that nothing can be accomplished without some sort of effort involved. Even though you will begin to see important benefits in your life relatively quickly, you will not progress or "receive attainment" instantly. Progression in the Gnostic Esoteric Work is similar to that of any other activity or skill you wish to develop - it takes time, practice, and effort to learn the fundamentals and even more to master the skill. With patience and dedication, however, anything can be accomplished. Is it true that the Gnostic teachings are freely shared throughout the world? The Gnostic Centers throughout the world are non-profit organizations, relying entirely on voluntary student and participant donations. No person involved in the running and operation of such a center is monetarily compensated for his or her services. The goal of all centers is to share Gnosis with anyone interested, regardless of race, sex, religious background, occupation, etc. The Gnostic teachings can thus be considered as "free" by not having a monetary price set on them. This, however, does not mean that the teachings are superficial - on the contrary, they are among the most profound teachings that exist in the world today. If a monetary price was to be placed on them, then these teachings would be enormously expensive! Rather, the "fruits" of Gnosis are "bought" through the effort of the student - the more effort and work the student puts into studying, understanding, and practicing the teachings, the greater will be the fruits of his or her efforts. Since Gnosis possesses such profound teachings, why isnt it more widely known (7 of 9) [12/7/2007 5:56:06 PM]
  13. 13. FAQs.html throughout the world? The Gnostic Movement has spread rapidly since its creation by V. M. Samael Aun Weor in the 1950s. Today, Gnostic centers can be found in many countries throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. Centers can be found throughout the world teaching in many different languages, such as Spanish, English, French, Japanese, Italian, German, Greek, Portuguese, etc. There are several hundred thousand students in the world today who are studying and practicing Gnosis. There are two major reasons why most people are not familiar with Gnosis. The first reason is the content of its teachings: Gnosis is concerned with inner development leading towards self-realization, something that the majority of humanity is not genuinely interested in. It is unfortunate, but most people value their material, career, and social growth above all else. Although the Gnostic teachings can greatly help one to materially and socially advance, the majority of people, even if they have heard of Gnosis, do not pursue its teachings further. Thus Gnosis predominantly appeals to people who have questions about life and are actively seeking answers. This is underscored by the ancient wise saying, "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." The second reason that Gnosis is not widely known is that Gnostic Centers do not actively try to recruit, influence, or persuade anyone to accept Gnosis against their will. Advertisements for talks and courses are usually placed in areas where people in the general public have access to them, such as bookstores, newspapers, etc. After seeing the advertisement or hearing about the course or lecture through word of mouth, it is the individuals decision whether or not to attend. Thus it is always through personal choice that one takes part in the activities of a Gnostic Center. How can I learn more about Gnosis? (8 of 9) [12/7/2007 5:56:06 PM]
  14. 14. FAQs.html There are several ways you can learn more about the Gnostic teachings. If you live in the Los Angeles area, you may attend courses at the Gnostic Center. For a list of titles and dates of public courses being offered at the center, please go the Current Events page. If you would like to know the locations of other centers in Los Angeles and throughout the world, and in what language Gnosis is taught there, please go to the International Directory. Another way to find out more about the Gnosis is through the books of V. M. Samael Aun Weor, founder of the Gnostic movement, who wrote over 70 books on all aspects of Gnosis (meditation, psychology, alchemy, kabbalah, astral travel, healing with plants, etc.). These books were originally written in Spanish, and are presently being translated into other languages, including English. 16. 16. Samael Aun Weor HIS LIFE, HIS WORKS, HIS MISSION Inspirational QuotesSamael Aun Weor is the contemporary founder of the Gnostic movement in the20th century. Gnosis, a practical and timeless knowledge, teaches the direct pathto self-realization.HIS LIFE: Samael Aun Weor left us this complete practical wisdom in over 70works that he authored and in over 500 cassette lectures given in his lifetime.Born in Santa Marta, Columbia in 1916, he moved to Mexico in the 1950s, andcontinued his lifes work there--that of achieving self-realization while alsotirelessly disseminating the Gnostic teachings. Having been born awake, he knewhis lifes mission. However, as he himself states in his writings, he had muchwork to complete on himself. He achieved the philosophers stone, the magnumopus, in his lifetime and left us a complete map of the path that leads to such anacquisition.HIS WORKS: His writings reveal a profound inner knowledge, knowledge thatcould only be obtained from profound meditation and work on oneself. He iscalled the "Master of Synthesis" for his works embrace techniques and conceptsof both Eastern and Western traditions. His works reveal an Eastern grasp andfamiliarity of the concepts of rebirth, karma, reincarnation, meditation to silencethe mind and experience reality, (to name a few topics). However, they alsoreveal an equally thorough grasp and familiarity with esoteric Christianity andWestern science. His works and lectures, at all times, encompass both concepts aswell as practical techniques.HIS MISSION: Samael Aun Weor always emphasized and taught practicalGnosticism - the Gnosis. As the definition of Gnosis states, it is the knowledge ofthe heart obtained only by direct experience. His works include treatises onGnostic esoteric psychology, alchemy, tarot and kabbalah, cosmology, culturalanthropology, elemental therapy (healing with nature spirits), runic mysteries, dream yoga, astral travel, the Tibetan rites of rejuventation, the silence of themind and experiencing reality in meditation, psychoanalytical meditation, esotericastrology, mysteries of life and death, the education of the child, etc., all of whichhave an underlying and urgent call to action, to change, and work on oneself. This change which in essence constitutes awakening from our deep sleep is (2 of 4) [12/7/2007 5:56:11 PM]
  17. 17. Samael Aun Weorcarried out through revolution, a revolution against the tyranny of ego, against thehold that egos fascination has on us. This change occurrs by putting into practicethe three factors for the Revolution of Consciousness, factors that he mentions inevery work that he authored.THE THREE FACTORS: The three factors needed to awaken consciousness, thethree factors which are necessary to achieve self realization, areDeath : the elimination of ego (Buddhist annihilation),Birth: the creation of an authentic man (creation of solar bodies) through sexualtransmutation and alchemySacrifice: working for others without expectations, rewards or any type ofcompensation or recognition. Thus, he wrote, because he had traversed the path himself. He knew the pitfallsand achievements possible and was able to guide us from his present lifeexperiences, and achievements, and from his recall of his past lives in Tibet andChina etc. The essence of wisdom is, then, contained in his teachings.Samael Aun Weor left us in December 1977. However, his teachings live onthroughout the world as thousands of Gnostic students continue to teach thisknowledge. While he himself taught, he never charged for such knowledge and itwas his wish that the teachings continue to be disseminated in this manner. Why do we live?Unquestionably, the poor "intellectual animal" mistakenly called man, does not only not know, but moreover, he does not even know that he does not know. In theGnostic teachings, "mother" stands for so much more than one day out of the year. Wealways keep in mind the importance of the Eternal Feminine Principle in the Gnostic esotericwork both for the daily work on oneself in self-remembering and self-observation and in thealchemical work on the dissolution of the psychological ego. We have included an articleexcerpted from Master Samaels writings and an article submitted by a student on why wereally celebrate Mothers Day. In the art gallery, we have representations of the cosmicmother and our particular divine mother from the Egyptian Tarot. Last, but not least, we (1 of 8) [12/7/2007 5:56:29 PM]

Write to us The Eternal Feminine Principle"Each of us has his Individual, Particular Divine Mother. She, in herself, is a part of ourBeing, but a derived part. All ancient people adored God-Mother. That Eternal FemininePrinciple is Isis, Mary, Tonantzin, Cybele, Rhea, Adonia, Insoberta, etc. If in the merephysical world we have a father and a mother, in the most profound part of our Being wealso have our Father who is in Secret and our Divine Mother Kundalini. There are as manyFathers in Heaven as there are men on Earth. God-Mother, in our own interior, is thefeminine aspect of the Father who is in secret."If we carry out a retrospection of that woman that rocked us in our cradle and breastfed uswhen we were babies, there we will find a poem lived very intimately, in a profound andnatural manner, a poem of an extraordinary simplicity and a greatness that always goesunnoticed by all those "humanoids" that have their consciousness asleep.I want you to be conscious of what that living verse is, what that ineffable melody of theEternal Feminine principle is. The great Mother is too compassionate when she gives us thisverse without us deserving it, after we have been perverse, after we have dragged ourselvesin the mud of the earth, life after life.We die and then we return to be rocked in a cradle without deserving it, to be loved bysomeone who only sees in us hope, to be guided by her who is wholly love. It seemsparadoxical and it would not have an explanation if the All Merciful, the Eternal CosmicCommon Father or Aelohim, as the ancients called him, did not exist. (2 of 8) [12/7/2007 5:56:29 PM]

Wewould see ourselves taking our first steps, held by her and if we continue the retrospectiveexercise, we would remember not only the previous existence, but also the one before that.We will have to find ourselves in one of those poems, with a childhood lullaby, in a crib. And in this manner, continuing in a retrospective manner, going backwards, from century tocentury, from era to era, we will be able to hear the same songs, the same lullabies, to feelthe Eternal Feminine always loving us, carrying us in her arms, breastfeeding us, pamperingus. All those mothers that we have had throughout innumerable births... it seems as if they would have definitely been lost in time; however, truthfully, all of them are the living expression of the Great Cosmic Mother. In the eyes of our Devi Kundalini Shakti, our individual, particular Cosmic Mother, we see the glow of all the eyes of the innumerable mothers that we have had in the past. In her (our Divine Mother Kundalini), in her (our particular Isis), are represented all those dear mothers that have loved us throughout countless centuries. Thisis the reason why we should really love our Cosmic Mother, the living representation of theEternal Feminine Principle. All the dear mothers that have seen to us throughout the courseof history, all of them that sang lullabies to us, all those that fed us, are, deep down, one andthe same: Isis (whom no mortal has ever yet unveiled), Neith, the Blessed God-Mother ofthe World. If we think about that Eternal Feminine Principle, about God-Mother, we see thatour particular God-Mother is a Ray of that Blessed God-Mother of the World. In this manner, then, the Eternal Feminine Principle that has seen to our needs throughout somany centuries, that has rocked us in so many cradles, is she: our Divine Mother. All thedear mothers we have had, all the mothers we have had throughout diverse eras arepersonified in her. Fortunately, we have not lost them, they have remained in our DivineMother. And in what manner can we come closer to our Divine Mother? Before anything else, dearbrothers, learning to love our earthly mother (as the starting point) since she is the livingrepresentation of the Eternal Feminine Principle; learning to love all the dear mothers of theworld. And when it comes to us males, learning to see in each woman a mother, to see inthem the living representation of the Eternal Feminine Principle, because if we see a womanand the first thing that comes to mind is lust,...then we are insulting the Eternal FemininePrinciple, ...we are ill-treating the being who is wholly love. Let us reflect my dear brothers, let us reflect... Let us make ourselves worthy, if we really and truly want to walk with DeviKundalini Shakti. Then our hearts, aglow with love, will come close to her and she to us. (3 of 8) [12/7/2007 5:56:29 PM]
  26. 26. May Gnostic newsletterIf people had their consciousness awaken, they would know how to appreciate that beingwho is the mother; however, people have their consciousness asleep and because of this areincapable of really appreciating the being who is the mother. It is necessary then to becomemore conscious each time of what the Eternal Feminine Principle is. by Samael Aun Weor From ""The Eternal Feminine Principle" Why We Celebrate Mothers DayMothers Day is a holiday celebrated annually in several countries during the middle ofMay. It is a day to remember the mothers of the world, and to honor them for the labors andsacrifices they selflessly go through for the benefit of their children. In many countries thereis not a Mothers Day but rather a "Womens Day," when all women, regardless ofmotherhood, are recognized. What most people are unaware of is that in addition to theirphysical mother they also have their Inner Mother, the Divine Feminine Principle, withinthem. It is important to realize that on Mothers Day we should remember and thank ourInner Divine Mother as well as our physical mother. In present-day Christianity, as in most major religions found in the world, the Divine Feminine Principle is overlooked. Most priests, pastors, reverends, etc. are male; in addition, the primary holy figure in these religions is male - Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, etc. Over the years religions have tended to suppress or even completely forget the female principle, although in the esoteric aspect of these religions the feminine principle remained alive and active. A religion takes archetypal principles and gives them form specific to the society and culture it is part of. The Divine Feminine Principle is the archetype that refers to "God as Mother," just as there is another principle representing "God as Father." All ancient civilizations adored the Eternal Feminine Principle, and in all their religions there was a figure representing the Divine Feminine: Mary, Isis, Tonantzin, Cybele, Adonia, etc. Evennature itself is often represented as a mother - thus the term "Mother Nature."Gnosis places great importance on the Divine Feminine Principle. It is a principle foundwithin every human being. In the same way that each of us has his or her own particularphysical mother, we each have our own individual Divine Mother as well. She is a part ofour Being, residing in the internal worlds of each persons heart center. It is said that thereare as many Mothers in heaven as there are beings who live on the face of the earth. The fact (4 of 8) [12/7/2007 5:56:29 PM]
  27. 27. May Gnostic newsletterthat the Divine Mother exists individually within each human being was not taughtexoterically to the masses, but was only taught in secret to initiates of mystery schoolsthroughout the world. Beethovens "Immortal Beloved" was not a physical woman, butrather his own Inner Divine Mother. Our Cosmic Mother possesses great wisdom, power, and love, and she is vitally importantto our inner work. She is beyond the body, the affections, and the mind. She is, by herself, anigneous power vastly superior to the mind, and it is said that in Her resides absoluteperfection.Self-realization is impossible without eliminating the psychological ego, the summation ofall those negative psychological elements that exist within our psyche and stunt our innergrowth. The elimination of these defects requires a power greater than the mind, and ourDivine Mother is precisely that power. Only She has the power to disintegrate apsychological defect, provided we have previously comprehended it through in-depthmeditation. Only with the help of our Divine Mother is it possible to transmute the sexualenergies and awaken the Kundalini during the alchemical work, in order for our solar bodiesto be created and our inner powers to be awakened. We should often pray to our Divine Mother, asking her to help us continually in our innerwork. Without her constant help it is easy to stray from the path and be "swallowed" byeveryday life. Prayer to our Divine Mother should not follow a specific formula. Rather itshould be simple and natural, just like a child who speaks to its mother doesnt use a specialformula. The child just says what comes from the heart and that is all. In profoundmeditation we can communicate directly with our Divine Mother, asking her to help usovercome the obstacles standing in our way. Our Cosmic Mother doesnt have a particularform, but likes to take up some form when she appears before us. She can appear as Isis,Rhea, Cybele, Mary, Tonantzin, etc. Or, she can appear to us, in dreams, as our own physicalmother or grandmother. If we are sincere with our petitions, it is certain that She will grantus the help we are seeking. Thus we see that, although known only by a few, our Divine Mother plays an indispensiblerole in our inner development. By forgetting Her and Her role we march towards definitespiritual failure, even if our intentions are sincere. In the words of Master Samael: "Itbecomes necessary to be upright, to understand the need for returning to the original pointof departure, to the infancy of the mind and heart. There is only one path, to appeal to ourDivine Mother, to know how to really love our Divine Mother, to comprehend her. Weshould identify ourselves more and more each time with the Eternal Feminine Principle." Back to top (5 of 8) [12/7/2007 5:56:29 PM]

  36. 36. Featured Article CELEBRATING VALENTINES DAY THE ART OF LOVING AND BEING LOVED"In the name of the truth, I must tell you that love begins with a spark of sympathy, is substantiatedwith the force of affection and becomes synthesized in adoration. To love, how great it is to love. Only great souls can, and know how to love.In order for love to exist, there needs to be affinity of thoughts, affinity of sentiments, identical mentalpreoccupation. It is the consecration of two souls anxious to express in a deducible manner what theyinwardly live. The sexual act becomes the consubstantiation of love in the psychophysiological organism of our nature.A perfect marriage is the union of two beings, one who loves more and another who loves better. How noble the beloved one is, how noble the woman is when they are truly united by a bond of love. Aloving couple becomes mystical, charitable, helpful. If all human beings lived in love, happiness, peace, harmony, perfection would reign on the face of the earth.Certainly, a small handkerchief, a photograph, a picture, provoke in the one who is in love, ineffablestates of ecstasy. In such moments, he feels he is in communion with his beloved one, even if she is toofar away; this is how that which is called love is.Love is an effusion or energetic emanation that surges forth from the deepest part of the consciousness;those radiations of love stimulate the endocrine glands of the entire organism, and they produce millionsof hormones that invade the blood vessels filling them with extraordinary vitality.Love in itself is a cosmic force, a universal force that throbs in each atom, as it throbs in each sun. Thestars also know how to loveThe planets of our solar system orbit around the sun, incessantly attracted by that marvelous force oflove. The atoms in the molecules also orbit around the nuclear centers attracted by that formidable force oflove. 37. 37. Featured ArticleThere is love in the stars, in the rose that sends forth its delightful perfumeTo love is something ineffable, divine. Loving is an extraordinary cosmic phenomenon. In loves corner, only happiness reigns. When a couple is in the sexual union, in a true act of love, the most divine forcesof nature surround it. These forces, created in the cosmos, have once again come to create again. In thosemoments, man and woman are true gods in the most complete sense of the word. Therein lies thegreatness of love.Extraordinary are the forces that surround the couple during the sexual act in a matrimonial bedroom. However, those extraordinary forces can be lost and can be wasted in the holocaust of animal pleasurewhich motivates the behavior of the intellectual humanoidThis is how both the man and the woman are the two columns of the temple. These columns shouldneither be too far nor too close; there should be a space in order for love to pass between themMarriageTherefore, there is a great secret in love, and it seems to me that that has been well put by SigmundFreud. "Sublimation," he said, of the creative energy, to look at sex with profound respect.Obviously, the man and the woman, we would say, are like two parts of the same being. Man came out ofEden accompanied by his wife and he should return to Eden with the same wife.In other words, we would say: Man exited Eden through the doors of sex and it is only through that doorthat he can return to Eden; Eden is sex itself.I simply limit myself to think that a psychological, physiological, radical, biological transformation isderived from the transmutation and sublimation of the creative energy. Nietzches superman could beachieved by means of the transmutation of the sexual libido. However, the principal thing is to know how to love, without love all those prodigies could not beachievedReally and truly, I repeat, man and woman are two aspects of a same being. That is clear, love in itself isderived from the unknown of our being. I mean to say in an emphatic manner, that within ourselves, there in the most intimate profundities, we possess our Being. The latter has transcendental qualities ofeternality; he is what is divine in us.Love, I say, is a force that emanates precisely from that divine prototype existent in the depth of ourconsciousness; it is a type of energy that is capable of accomplishing authentic prodigies. 38. 38. Featured ArticlePractical Clues On The Art Of Loving And Being LovedArgumentsIn daily life, the man and the woman often quarrel; may times it is because of insignificant matters; theyquarrel. The man says one word, the woman another; it sometimes happens that a tiny word is sufficientfor one of the couple to react. They do not know how to control themselves. They do not want tounderstand that the home is the best psychological gymnasium. It is precisely in home life that we candiscover ourselves, it is in the home that we can get to discover our defects of a psychological nature.Have they offended us? Why do they hurt us? Could it be perhaps that we have jealousy? Could it be thatour self-esteem has been hurt? Could it be that our pride has been hurt? The truth? Orwhat? When one discovers that he has a psychological defect, one also has the opportunity to disintegrate it, toreduce it to cosmic dust. By eliminating our psychological errors, or psychological defects, we will oneday be able to attain the awakening of consciousness.Unfortunately, people do not want to change, nor eliminate their defectsWhen one recognizes that one has a psychological defect, he should eliminate it. One comes to discoverthat he has this or that error precisely in the home. That is why the home serves as a psychologicalgymnasium for us.Comprehension, A Vital ToolMany complain that their wives are irascible, that they are jealous. They wish to find themselves anotherwife that is going to be a paradise, and an angel descended from the stars, etc. They do not want tounderstand that the home is an extraordinary gymnasium and that it is there that we can discoverourselves. It is precisely in the home that we have the opportunity to discover our errors, and if wesucceed, we will achieve the awakening of consciousness.I say that we have to know how to love; comprehension between the man and the woman should alwaysreign in the home. The man should not expect his wife to be perfect; neither should the woman expect theman to be Prince Charming. We must accept things as they are and have the home as a school where weshould discover ourselves. As we eliminate the so many psychological defects that we have, happinesswill increase, and if one day we had to suffer a great deal, later, that home will become a paradise.Anger In the MarriageAnother factor of discord between couples, in the home, is anger. The man says something angrily, thewoman responds with two rocks in her hands, and in the end, they end up in a battle of broken plates andglasses, etc. That is the crude reality of facts. If the demon of anger was eliminated, peace would reign inthe homes, there would not be any pain. But I say to myself and I also tell you, why should there have to be anger within us? Why are we likethat? So, its not possible to change? Yes, it is possible! I proposed to change and I changed. I was irate, I (4 of 8) [12/7/2007 5:56:37 PM]
  39. 39. Featured Articlealso knew the process of anger. But I proposed myself to eliminate it and I eliminated it. Of course, I had to undergo certain sacrifices inorder to eliminate angerHow happy couples would be if they knew how to really love, if the man never had anger, if the womannever had anger. I understand that the honeymoon can be preservedIf one wants to really and truly preserve the honeymoon, one has to eliminate anger, one has to eliminatejealousy, one has to eliminate egotism. We should become comprehensive, to learn to excuse all theerrors of the beloved one. No one is born perfect! The man should know that the woman has her defects. The woman should comprehend that the man has his. Mutually, they should excuse each otherspsychological defects. If they proceed in this manner, they will preserve the honeymoon!Knowledge Of Psychology: A PrerequisiteWhen a couple gets married, they should understand psychology better. Usually, one of the two beginsby offending the other; the other person reacts and also offends. A conflict is forms; the conflict passes, the two become reconciled and everything apparently continues in peace, but there is no such thing!Resentment remains! On another day, there is another conflict, the husband and wife quarrel over anyfoolishness, perhaps over jealousy, or over anything else. The results: The conflict ended, and anotherresentment remains, and so forth and so forth, from one conflict to another, the resentments increase andthe honeymoon is coming to an end. Finally, there is no longer any such thing (honeymoon), it is over. What do exist are resentments through and through, and if they do not become divorced from each other,if they continue together, they now do it out of duty or simply out of animal passion and that is allNon-Reaction In ConflictsSo your wife insulted you? She told you ugly words? Stay serene, calm, do not react for nothing inworld, bite your tongue before answering. In the end, upon seeing you so serene without any type ofreaction, she will feel tremendously ashamed and will ask you for forgiveness.Woman, your husband insulted you? What did he tell you? Is he being jealous over the fiancé that youhad before? What happened? Is he in a bad mood? Did he return from the street tremendouslyneurasthenic? Remain serene, serve him his food, his clothes, help him to bathe, kiss him, love him, andthe more he insults you, the more you love him. What will happen at last? Women, you can be certainthat in the end, the man will be tremendously repented, he will feel that remorse is eating his heart andwill even kneel before you to ask you for forgiveness. He will see a saint, a martyr in you. He willconsider himself a tyrant, evil. You will have won the battle! If both the man and the woman proceed in this manner, if they act according to this formula, I canguarantee you that the honeymoon will not be lost, because the man learns little by little to dominatehimself, to comprehend that his wife is a saint; and the woman, little by little, realizes that her husband istremendously noble. The moment arrives when neither one of the two wants to hurt each other. Theyadore each other; the honeymoon continues during their entire life. (5 of 8) [12/7/2007 5:56:37 PM]
  40. 40. Featured ArticleThis is the art of loving and being loved. Is your wife crying? Kiss her tears, caress her. What, she doesnot accept your caresses? Well, wait a little for her anger to go away.Anger has a beginning and an end. Any storm, no matter how strong, has a beginning and a conclusion.Wait a moment, and you will see the result. The important thing is for you to not become angry. If yousucceed, if you control yourself, she will at last humbly come to you to ask you for forgiveness, and howgreat is the happiness of reconciliation. V.M. Samael Aun Weor Excerpts from "Love and Marriage" REFLECTIONS ON VALENTINES DAYMuch has been said and written over the years about love. Great thinkers, philosophers, and poets haveall created grand literary works involving the theme of love. Kings, queens, and common people alikehave all been influenced, and many times carried away, by love. Love is something universal, and ittouches and connects every human being. In the spirit of Valentines Day, it is important to deeply reflecton love: what love is, how it manifests, and what role it plays (or does not play) in our daily lives.Expressions involving the idea of love are abundant. We all have heard phrases such as, "We must love, not fight, one another", or "Peace can only be achieved through love", or "Love thy neighbor as thouwould thy own brother", etc. It is necessary to consider, however, whether such elevated ideals areactually found in the world today. Observe what is happening in different countries and ask yourself howmuch love exists among human beings. How can there be love in the world when there are wars, hatred, violence, riots, poverty, envy, etc.? How can there be true love between husband and wife, parent andchild, or between people in general when there exist anger, pride, adultery, lust, jealousy, selfishness, etc.?Reflecting on love within ourselves can be very valuable on the path of self-discovery. Many are thosemistaken people who sincerely believe they love their spouse, while what they feel is really passion; whobelieve they love their parents, family, and friends, when they are in reality dependent upon them; whobelieve they love their boss and profession when they are actually fearful of losing their job and thestatus and wealth it brings; and who believe they love their fellowman by donating their money and time, when deep inside them brood hidden desires of pride and recognition. The more we observe ourselves, our thoughts, emotions, and reactions, the more we come to realize thefollowing: when we think we love someone or something, there are really other secret desires, attachments, or needs within us that demand to be satisfied. It is these hidden elements that make us feelthat we love, when in essence we do not. (6 of 8) [12/7/2007 5:56:37 PM]
  41. 41. Featured ArticleGnosis makes a bold statement - that the vast majority of human beings do not know what true love is,and have never experienced it. True love is one that is pure, selfless, and unattached, wanting nothing inreturn. As long as we carry the exact opposite elements within us, such as hatred, lust, anger, impatience, etc., then we do not truly love. Love and its opposites cannot occupy the same space at the same time. Thus as long as we carry these negative elements within, love remains foreign to us. Love is a virtue thatmust be earned. It is cultivated and made to grow in a gradual manner through the systematic eliminationof those negative psychological elements, the psychological ego or "I", that currently exists within eachof us.Through daily practice of the Three Factors for the Revolution of Consciousness, we can cause true loveto grow and blossom within us. It is a methodic and gradual blooming, but the effects of this process willbe so beneficial to our inner growth that any efforts we put into it are extremely worthwhile. We shallthen comprehend the wisdom of Master Samaels affirmation, "Blessed are those who truly know how to love." POETRY In the words of William Shakespeare: "Let me not to the marriage of true minds Admit impediments. Love is not love Which alters when it alteration finds, Or bends with the remover to remove: O no; it is an ever-fixed mark, (7 of 8) [12/7/2007 5:56:37 PM]

This is appropriately covered with an article on the this third factor, an excerpt from one ofMaster Samaels books and with an article on the role of sacrifice in the Gnostic esoteric work.We have also included the message to missionaries by Master Samael Aun Weor which hasbecome quite widely known. 44. 44. Marcharticle.htmlyou in our next issue. We hope to keep past issues online for those of you who have just joined us and wish to readthem. We would like to hear from you. Write to us at! The Third Factor: Sacrifice for HumanityJesus the Christ said, "In loving one another, you will prove that you are my followers." But itwould be impossible to fulfill this Christic precept as long as we have within us the "Is" ofresentment and self love. It is urgent, undelayable, unpostponable to eliminate from our psychesuch undesirable elements. The "I" of resentment or the desire for revenge has always originatedgreat failures in the world. The third Factor is that of Sacrifice for humanity. It is necessary to love our fellowmen but lovehas to be shown with concrete, clear and definite facts. It is not enough to say that we love ourfellowmen; no, one has to show it with facts, one has to be ready to climb the ark of supremesacrifice for humanity, one has to lift the torch of wisdom, to illuminate the way for others; onehas to be ready to give up to the last drop of blood for all our fellowmen, with true, disinterested, pure love. The third factor for the Revolution of Consciousness is then Sacrifice for Humanity. Birth,Death and Sacrifice for humanity are the three factors that convert us into true incarnations ofthe Cosmic Christ. Those three factors come to convert us into gods, although we have thebodies of men. Those three factors come to make of us something different; they transform usinto Deidusus or ineffable gods, elohim, daimons, etc. If we work with the first and secondfactor, that of being born and dying, but we do not love our fellowmen, we do not do anything totake the light of knowledge to other people, towns and languages, we will fall into a veryrefined, spiritual egotism, that will impede all inner advancement. Since, if we only worry aboutourselves and only ourselves, forgetting so many millions of beings that inhabit the earth, unquestionably we will self-enclose ourselves in our own egotism. In this manner, the "I" ofegotism does not permit our enlightenment.Egotism can present itself in very refined ways and one has to eliminate them. As long as wehave egotism within us, enlightenment will not be possible.Humanity, one Family: We should comprehend that all of Humanity is one big family.Unfortunately, we are trapped in too many affections and we only consider as family a fewpersons that surround us, this is egotism; because all human beings, regardless of race, creed, caste or color are all one family. This family is called "humanity." (2 of 6) [12/7/2007 5:56:42 PM]
  45. 45. Marcharticle.htmlIf we only consider as brothers those who surrounded us from birth, we are acting wrongly. Ifwe only want to redeem those we call "our relatives" we are acting egotistically. To see in eachperson a brother is indispensable. What I am saying is not pure sentimentalism, it is real, just asit sounds: We are one family, only one family that should not be divided, an enormous familythat inhabits the earth and is called humanity. To these persons, our brothers, we need to take the knowledge, show them the Way, so that ,someday, they too can find it and arrive at the final liberation. If we want happiness, we should struggle for the happiness of others. The more one gives, themore one receives, but the one who gives nothing, even what he has will be taken away. Sacrifice in the Gnostic Esoteric WorkSacrifice, the Hidden Key: Sacrifice in the Gnostic Esoteric Work is often misunderstood bymany Gnostic students. Although it is absolutely fundamental to spiritual progress and growth, its role and value are not well-known (or well-accepted) by many people who study Gnosis. Yet,despite all the confusion surrounding its meaning and application, sacrifice is really the hiddenkey to overcoming any problem that one may have on the path to self-realization.Sacrifice is one of the Three Factors for the Revolution of Consciousness, and consequently isone of the cornerstones of the Gnostic Esoteric Work. In Gnosis, it consists of conscious andvoluntary actions, efforts, and sacrifices that one undertakes for the benefit of all of humanity.Even though sacrifice is very important, it is often neglected by Gnostic students. Thepsychological ego that we each carry within us is primarily responsible for relinquishingsacrifice. The ego is selfish and does not want to sacrifice anything it holds dear, especially forothers. If we study the lives of the great avatars and masters who have come to teach humanitywe can see the extraordinary efforts and sacrifices that they made for mankind. They were notselfish, keeping their knowledge for themselves alone, but rather they shared their teachings withas many people as they could. It is imperative to lose all selfishness and start working for thebenefit of others. Whether we can see it or not, our lives and the events that transpire withinthem are closely related with other peoples lives. It is a mistake to think that we are separated orisolated from our fellowman. The Role of KarmaThe reason the Gnostic student sacrifices for others is to pay back his or her karmic debts. TheLaw of Karma is a universal law that deals with "cause and effect", and is a very practical law.Every action that we undertake has a consequence, and thus good deeds produce goodconsequences while bad actions produce negative consequences. Even though we may not be (3 of 6) [12/7/2007 5:56:42 PM]
  46. 46. Marcharticle.htmlconsciously aware of it, we all have amassed large karmic debts throughout this lifetime andprevious lifetimes. These debts can either be paid back unconsciously through pain andsuffering, or by consciously performing sacrifice for humanity. The Gnostic student attempts topay back these debts through sacrifice.By understanding the Law of Karma we can see that absolutely nothing is given to us for free.Anything that we may want to achieve, whether it be spiritual or not, has a "price" associatedwith it. If we want to receive something, we must likewise give something in return. When wewant to purchase a certain item in a store, we exchange money for it. When we want to receiveknowledge, however, we must give knowledge. If we are to pursue the awakening ofconsciousness, we need to help others to awaken consciousness. This is how one effectivelyworks with the Law of Karma.Through sacrifice for humanity we attain merits, or "cosmic capital", by which we pay back ourpast karmic debts and also pay for what we presently want to achieve in our lives. Without suchmerits, obstacles constantly appear in our path. These obstacles appear because we do notdeserve what we are seeking. Mystical experiences are rare for some Gnostic students becausethey do not deserve to have these experiences (i.e. they have not paid the "cosmic capital"required for such experiences.) It is common for us to fail to comprehend an important teaching, and this holds us back in our inner work. Failure to comprehend a concept is completely due tous lacking the appropriate amount of inner merits. This is how sacrifice for others breaks downany barriers that may exist on our path - through the continuous attainment of additional meritswe "pay" for our own awakening and thus overcome all obstacles. To be compensated or not be compensated? It is very important to approach sacrifice with theproper inner attitude. This inner attitude consists of love and of not expecting anything in return. If one does good deeds while receiving monetary compensation, then he or she has already beenpaid - the Law of Karma does not give such a person inner merits for this action. If one doesgood deeds while expecting praise and applause in return, then such deeds are done to inflateones pride and not for the benefit of humanity; therefore the Law of Karma does not compensatesuch a person either. Rather, love should be the major force behind sacrifice. We should notsacrifice because we have to, but because we want to out of love. Love is something we shouldnurture within us, since without love we will not be able to overcome the forces of oppositionthat will appear in our own inner work. It has been said that "sacrifice is love in action".Sacrifice gives us the inner strength to go deeper and deeper in the Gnostic Esoteric Work. If atany point we stop working with sacrifice, we will also reach a halt in our inner work. In order toact on something, we need to not only understand the information intellectually, but bond with itemotionally as well. Sacrifice lets us do this. As with any other endeavor we may embark upon,we must approach sacrifice for humanity in a gradual manner and then constantly increase ourefforts. But the most important part is to begin. "He who has begun is half done. Dare to be wise;begin!" (4 of 6) [12/7/2007 5:56:42 PM]
  47. 47. Marcharticle.html A Message For Gnostic Missionaries "We need missionaries... patient men, who are capable of enduring the most arduous disciplines; friends of culture, true aspirants of the pure science. We want missionaries to have the sentiments of an artist, to love science, philosophy and mysticism; to delightfully vibrate with the Corinthian columns of Greece, the lover of beauty; to feel in their hearts the mysticism of a Francis of Assisi, to really love the wisdom of Egypt. We want missionaries, who can be as poetic as they are scientific; that they be able to investigate the atom and stop to meditate by the singing stream that flows on its rocky bed; missionaries who are capable of meditating at the feet of the ruins of Athens or of ancient Rome; missionaries who know how to admire the chisel of Praxiteles; missionaries who vibrate with the lyre of Orpheus and sing with Homer in the delightful land of the Hellenes That is the kind of missionaries that we yearn for! Missionaries who know how to admire the twinkling of the stars, missionaries who are in love with the pure nights; missionaries who have a fiancée, and that that fiancées name be Urania. 48. 48. Marcharticle.html That is the kind of missionaries that we desire! Missionaries who can garb themselves with the robe of sanctity, missionaries who place their mat at the feet of the Guru, in order to receive his wise precepts; missionaries who yearn for in-depth Christification and who truly feel the beauty of Love, as it was felt by brother Francis in his heart. Missionaries like these are what we need! [ February Issue ] [Top of Page ] [ HOME ] (6 of 6) [12/7/2007 5:56:42 PM]

  51. 51. Untitled Document The Cosmic Christ: Before anything else, it is urgent to know what the "Cosmic Christ" really is. It is urgent to know in the name of truth, that Christ, is not merely historical; people are used to thinking of Christ as a historical personage that existed 1,969 years ago. Such a concept is erroneous because Christ is not of time, Christ is atemporal! The Christ unfolds from instant to instant, from moment to moment. Christ in himself, is the Sacred Fire, the Universl, Cosmic Fire... INRI...And so Christ is the fire; that is why on the crossyou will see the four letters: "INRI" which means "Ignis natura RenovaturIntegram" which means "Fire incessantly renews all of nature."The Symbolism of Fire: Now you will begin to understand why we areinterested in the astral signature of fire, the flame of the flame, the hidden, theesoteric aspect of fire. And it is because in reality, fire is Christic, it has the powerto transform everything that is, everything that has been and everything that willbe. INRI is what interests us; without INRI it is not possible for us to Christifyourselves......It is by means of fire that we can Christify ourselves; it would have beenuseless for the Christ to have been born in Bethlehem if he was not born in ourhearts as well. He would have been crucified and died and resurrected in the HolyLand uselessly, if he was not born, died and resurrected in us as well.We need to incarnate the Cosmic Crestos, the spirit of fire, make him fleshwithin us; as long as we have not done this, we will be dead to the things of thespirit because he is life, the Logos, the Great Word......We need the fire to burn within us; only INRI, the sacred name on the cross of themartyr of Calvary, can subdue the psychic aggregates...The Christ...The Christ, the spirit of fire, is not a merely historical personage, heis the Army of the verb, he is a force that is beyond personality, ego andindividuality. He is a force, like electricity, like magnetism, a power, a greatcosmic and universal agent. He is the electrical force that can originate new (3 of 6) [12/7/2007 5:56:52 PM]
  52. 52. Untitled Documentmanifestations. This cosmic fire enters the man who is duly prepared......The hour has arrived to understand that only the "Fohat" can transform usradically. INRI is formidable, it reduces the psychological aggregates to ashes. But we need to work with the fire. From "The Cosmic Christ and the Holy Week" The Esoteric Symbolism of Easter In todays society the holiday of Easter has lost much of its real significance. The religious value of Easter, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, has been put in the background. As with many other holidays (holy-days) it has become commercialized, with the Easter bunny, painted eggs, and chocolates becoming the primary focus. Although some of these, such as the eggs, do contain some religious symbolism, it is important to realize that there are far deeper mysteries behind Easter. The Holy Week is a good time to reflect on these mysteries, which have been taught in initiatic schools for many centuries. (4 of 6) [12/7/2007 5:56:52 PM]
  53. 53. Untitled DocumentThe Holy Week: The holy week culminating on Easter Sunday symbolizes morethan the trials, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus Christ is often calledthe historical Christ, because he was an actual historical figure who taught hisdoctrine in the holy land two thousand years ago. But the real Christic force, theCosmic Christ, is not of time or of the three-dimensional universe. The CosmicChrist is the Sacred Fire, the Cosmic Sacred Fire. The great master Jesus earnedthe title of Christ because he was one of the few who incarnated the CosmicChrist within Himself. The Christic Fire: The Sacred Fire of the Cosmic Christ is not the same as thefire that burns of the earth. Rather it is the occult, or esoteric aspect of fire, theAstral Fire, the Flame of the Flames. The Christic Fire is the fire of the Spirit thatfertilizes the chaotic matter, that has the power to create atoms and universes andalso to disintegrate them. The Christic Fire has the power to transform all that is,all that has been, and all that will be, including the power to transform us so thatwe may reach intimate self-realization. It is by means of this Fire that we mayChristify ourselves. We need the Christ to penetrate us so that He can change us radically. Once theFire of the Christ blazes within us we will be transformed, enjoying fullillumination and cosmic powers. Only this Fire can destroy those psychologicaldefects that comprise the ego, which at present keep our consciousnessimprisoned. The Three Traitors: The events that transpired during the Holy Week, asdescribed in the gospels, must be lived within ourselves in order for us to becomeChristified beings. Just as Jesus was physically born, crucified, and resurrected inthe holy land, so too should the Inner Christ go through the same within ourselvesin order for us to become Christified. It is important to realize that all thehistorical figures that existed around Jesus have their counterparts within ourpsyche. The three traitors who crucified Christ are inside each of us. Judas is thedemon of desire, that constantly torments us. Pilate is the demon of the mind, which washed its hands and provides justifications for everything. And Caiaphasis the demon of ill-will, that causes us to stray from doing the Will of the Father. (5 of 6) [12/7/2007 5:56:52 PM]
  54. 54. Untitled DocumentThe multitudes of people who asked for the Lords crucifixion are all the inhumanpsychic aggregates that we carry within, which comprise the psychological ego.Who whipped Christ? Who are the ones who spit on Him? Who crowned Himwith a crown of thorns? Who are the ones who cried "Crucifixion, Crucifixion",sending Him off to death? Are they not the same multitude of psychologicaldefects that we have created and carry in our interior? The Twelve Apostles: The twelve apostles are found within ourselves as well. They are the twelve fundamental parts of our own Being, found in our interiorhere and now. There is a Peter, a John, a Philip, and Andrew, a Matthew, etc.,each with his own powers and virtues. Whoever wishes to become a true initiateor esoterist must learn to relate with himself, with the twelve parts of his/her innerBeing. But this is only possible by burning the psychological defects with theChristic Fire, since the correct relation with each of the parts of out Being isimpossible as long as the ego continues to exist within us.Therefore Easter, the Holy Week, and the entirety of Christic history is not just atale of yesterday, confined exclusively to the past. It holds deep esotericmysteries, and for those who have gained comprehension it is a story of thepresent, a mystery that will unfold into work towards ones own Christification, here and now.
