4. SIKKIM
THE DESTINATION
Earstwhile an independent kingdom, Sikkim is a north eastern state of India. Located
in the Himalayas it resembles the neck of a dragon.it has earned a number of
sobriquets by different people. Tibetans have named it denzong or the valley of rice
while nepalis call it sukhim or new home. Leppachas are in fact the original
inhabitants of Sikkim who call their motherland as Nye-Mal-Ale or heaven. It has no
open valleys or plains but has varied elevation ranging from 300 to 8583 meter above
the sea level.
Sikiim offers a lot of wildlife and adventure and sporting options to the visitors. All of
those who want to make an adventurous voyage this is a place of must visit. Sikkim
has everything for you including trekking, hiking, and river rafting. Eastern
Himalayan slopes are simply captivating. Whole of the area lures all the visitors with
it’s bewitching beauty. An exiting river rafting experience enthralls all after the
twisting and fast turning row boats.
Eco-tourism in Sikkim:
The scenic surrounding gets embellished by the flora of Sikkim. Around 36% of the
total land is covered by lush forest. Vegetation here includes: figs, laurel, sal trees and
bamboos. Maple, brich, alder, oak, chestnut, and magnolia are found in abundance.
There are also other flower and plants to attract everybody. Sikkim is famous world
over for its orchids. Some of the varieties of orchide found over here are cymbidiums,
cattlelyas, dendrobiums, hooheriana, far-amoneum etc.
Although Sikkim is small in size there are around 500 species of avi fauna, 600 species
of butterflies and a delightful species of mammals. Some of the most attractive birds
here include emerald dove, woodpeckers, cuckoos, kingfishers, and fairy blue bird.
Surprisingly you can see ducks and wild asses flourishing in these higher altitudes.
Sikkim is divided into four regions north, south, east and west districts and each
district has got something to offer unique to itself, these are shown below

5. North Sikkim:
(magical valleys mythical moments)
It is sheer magic- the sparkle of snow, awsone georges, spine chilling trails, the breath
taking lure of the mountains and the peaceful and simplest life of the nomadic hearders
and rare tribal societies, north Sikkim is still unexplored fully and this it what makes this
place more longed for. Some of the places to see in this district are:
Singhik
A fascinating point to view the snowey mt. kanchendzonga range. It also offers enough
opportunities for short nature trails. A tourist lodge offers visitors a reason to stay back
and relish the sylvan mountain side.
Chungthang
Sprawled between the confluence of lachung chu and lachen chu (chu=river) that is the
starting point of the Teesta it is the major settlement in north Sikkim. Surprisingly ,
paddy thrives exactly in this region and no where else in this region as the region is said
to have been blessed. A huge rock and a small collection of water below the rock is
considered holy.
Lachung
A tribal village at 8600 ft. where a tribal self government self rule , the dzumas still rule
the tribe with its ancient traditions. One can spend a night here and antiquate the unique
ways of the village and also visit the fascinating yumthang valley.
Yumthang
Surrounded by an alpine forest of silver and fur and high snow capped peaks, its charm
gets even more irresistible when primulas carpet the valley floor along with the outburst
of rododendrones, primroses and other wild blossoms. It is also famous for its hot
springs.
Yumesamdong
About 24 km’s from yumthang the trail is filled with the fragrance of azellia, a plant
collected by locals as incense. Mountainous terrain in snow.
Lachen
Another tribal village at 9600 ft. is also ruled by the dzumsa. The foot point of all the
village activity is the lachen monastery located in the upper section of the village. A good
numbers of villagers are still yak heardersand keep migrating with their heard.
South Sikkim:
This district came into focus with the inauguration of the tallest statue of guru
Padmasambhava in the world at Samdruptse over looking namchi the south district
headquarters. The prides of this district are:
Namchi
This south district headquarters lies about 78 km’s from gangtok. At 4400 ft. it offers
a panoramic view of the snowy ranges and pristine landscape all around.
Tendong hill
Overlooking Namchi, this hillock at 8530 ft. is surrounded by lush green aging forest
of a deluge.
Maenam hill
Towering over the Tendong hill it looms on the other side overlooking Ravangla. At
10,300 ft. the view from atop this hill is simply mindblowing.
Borong
Borong can be accessed by a motorable road from Ravangla or a trek from Maenam.
A hot spring “borong- tchu” is much visited here. Coupled with it’s excellent
landscape and views, it is simply irresistible.
West Sikkim
This district I Sikkim is yet another traveler’s fantasy. With gorgeous sights of the
snowy ranges, trekking trails, mountains, historical sites, lakes, this landscape would
surely keep you yearning for more. Attractions of this districts are:

6. Pelling
About 140km’s from gangtok,this is the most urbanized and growing area in the
district. At around 16000 ft. this place offers one of the most enchanting views of
kanchendzonga range.
Kanchendzonga water fall
Lying about an hour’s drive from Pelling the natural beauty of this lake gives pleasure
to the eyes and mind of the nature lovers.
Khecheopalri lake
Located In a serene valley and surround with pristine forest, situated about 125 km’s
away from pelling, this revered by them.
Yuksom
A rarely populated remote village was the first capital of Sikkim. A beautiful landscape
is a base camp for the trekkers heading to Dzongri and kanchendzonga base camp.
Varsey
Perched at 10,000 ft a road leads up to Hilley from where a leisurely 4 km trek leads to
the Rhododendron sanctuary famed for its varied species of flower.

Gangtok
The capital of Sikkim, it’s here you get a tinge of your overall experience in Sikkim,

Tashi view point
Offering a glorious view of kanchendzongarange, this view point lies around 8 km’s from
Gangtok on the
Ganesh Tok
Stranded about 7 km’s from Gangtok, it is temple placed on a hill top dedicated to Lord
Ganesha. This place offers a breathtaking view of the kanchendzonga range.
Himalayan zoological park
Located a kilometer away from Ganesh tok this zoological park is the protected adobe of
the rare species of Red panda which is also the national animal of Sikkim. other animals
like the Himalaya bear, barking deer, monkeys, leopards are also found here.
Tsomgo lake
The lake with an un-definable beauty lies about a 2 hour drive from Gangtok and is the
most visited attraction of Sikkim, it is in the must visit lists of Sikkim attractions. Lying at
an altitude of 12,400 ft. this lake freezes completely in the winter.
Nathula pass
A few km’s away from the tsomgo lake lies the nathula pass which is a pass between the
India and China. It can be accessed by one of the highest motor-able road.
Fam-bong-lho wildlife sanctuary
located about 25 km’s away from the town, this sanctuary is a forest loaded with oak,
chestnut bamboos, ferns etc. it also nurses a large number of rhododendron species,
orchids, and a large variety of flora and fauna.
Rumtek Monastery- Rumtek
Rumtek also called the Dharmachakra Centre, is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery located
24 km from Gangtok, the capital of the Sikkim, at an altitude of about 1500 m.. It is a
focal point for the sectarian tensions that characterize the Karmapa Controversy.
The Rumtek monastery or the Dharma Chakra Centre is located on the top of the hill
facing the city of Gangtok. Rumtek Monastery is one of the most important seats of the
Kagyu lineage outside Tibet. This monastery complex embodies the vision and
aspiration of the Sixteenth Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, to establish his seat-in-exile
in order to spread the teachings of the Buddha throughoutthe world. The Rumtek
monastery is the largest monastery in Sikkim, and a home of the monks community. The
complex has many sacred objects. One of the most magnificent object is the Golden
Stupa, which contains the precious relics of His Holiness, the Sixteenth Karmapa
