Shwatek Patel, a graduate student at the time, thought consumers needed more. He went on to develop a series of algorithms that make it possible to isolate the individual signature of different appliances and uses of electricity (like lighting). When put to use, it enables homeowners to see what they’re spending, hour by hour – even appliance by appliance – so they can reduce their bills.
