On the Front Lines in Global Health Security: Internship at the World Health Organization International Health Regulations (IHR) Secretariat Jill Scott, Thomas Francis, Jr. Fellow, 2008 Geneva, Switzerland, June 23 – August 15, 2008 University of Washington J.D./M.P.H candidate, 2008 ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],The IHR in Action: Marburg Hemorrhagic Fever Situation: On July 10, 2008, following procedures under the IHR (2005), Dutch authorities notified the European Regional Office of WHO of an imported case of Marburg haemorrhagic fever (MHF) in a tourist who visited caves in Uganda. Response: Within minutes of the notification, WHO HQ were informed of the event and initiated a risk assessment together with the WHO Regional Offices for Europe and Africa. Less than five hours after notification and following the consultation with the two countries experiencing the event, WHO communicated crucial public health information related to the MHF case to all (194) States Parties to the IHR. Outcome: There were no further cases of MHF related to this event.
