  • Facebook News Feed Facebook gave more insight into how News Feed works and announced a change to it August 6. News Feed “delivers the right content to the right people at the right time so they don’t miss the stories that are important to them,” according to Facebook. Every time someone visits News Feed, there are on average 1,500 potential stories from friends, people they follow and Pages for them to see. Most users interact with content on Facebook through the News Feed. So, it is important to understand how News Feed works and how to optimize your content.
  • How does Facebook decide what to show on News Feed? When a user likes something, that tells News Feed that they want to see more of it. When a user hides something, that tells News Feed to display less of that content in the future. This allows Facebook to prioritize an average of 300 stories out of an average of 1,500 stories to show each day to each user.
  • How does Facebook decide what to show on News Feed? News Feed also responds to: • How often a user interacts with a friend, Page, or public figure (like an actor or journalist) who posted • The number of likes, shares and comments that a post receives from the world at large and from a user’s friends in particular • How much a user has interacted with the type of post (i.e. photo, video, link) in the past • Whether or not a user and other people across Facebook are hiding or reporting a given post
  • What’s new with News Feed? Facebook also announced “story bumping.” Now stories that people did not scroll down far enough to see can reappear near the top of News Feed if the stories are still engaging (getting lots of likes and comments). This means the most popular posts by Pages have a higher chance of being seen even if they are a few hours old.
  • How should you use this information? 1. Use Facebook Insights to determine: • What content is most engaging • Which type of post is most engaging (i.e. photo, link, video) • When you are reaching the most users with the most engaging content 2. Track the above information over an extended period of time 3. Decide if you need to change your strategy
