  • 1. Diversity Visa Program Know the facts
  • 2. What is the Diversity Visa Program?
  • 3. What is the Diversity Visa Program? The Diversity Visa (DV) program, popularly known as the Green Card lottery or the DV lottery, makes U.S. immigrant visas available to people from countries with historically low levels of immigration to the United States. 50,000 visas are available through the 2016 DV program (DV-2016). The rules are strict but simple. Entries can be completed without the assistance of a third party. This presentation is designed to help you decide if you are eligible for DV-2016. There are many websites and individuals that will try to mislead you into thinking they represent the U.S. Government or that they can increase your chances. Don’t get caught out. Keep reading to check out the facts before you enter.
  • 4. Am I eligible?
  • 5. Eligibility You will only qualify for the DV-2016 if you are a native of a qualifying country and you meet the education or work experience requirement. Be wary of websites or individuals telling you otherwise.
  • 6. Eligibility Eligibility for entry is determined by place of birth not citizenship or nationality. You may be eligible to enter DV-2016 if you were born in one of the qualifying countries listed at http://dld.bz/DVinstructions
  • 7. Eligibility If you were born in any of the following countries: The United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) Bangladesh Brazil Canada China (mainland-born) Colombia Dominican Republic Ecuador El Salvador Haiti India Jamaica Nigeria Mexico Pakistan Peru Philippines South Korea Vietnam you will not qualify for DV-2016, unless: Your spouse was born in a qualifying country and is listed on the DV entry or At least one of your parents was born in a qualifying country neither of your parents was born in your country of birth and neither of your parents was considered resident in your country of birth at the time you were born
  • 8. Eligibility If you have at least one of the following you may be eligible to enter DV-2016: • A high school education or its equivalent (successful completion of at least a 12 year course of elementary and secondary education) • At least 2 years of qualifying work experience in the last 5 years in an occupation requiring at least 2 years of training or experience to perform Carefully review http://dld.bz/DVinstructions to check if your education or work experience qualifies.
  • 9. If you meet the place of birth and education or work experience requirements, you are eligible to register for DV-2016. If not, don’t give money to a website or individual claiming they can improve your chances. If you are not eligible to enter the DV program, you cannot receive a visa!! Don’t risk the inconvenience and expense of finding out too late that you don’t qualify. Read the instructions at http://dld.bz/DVinstructions carefully before deciding whether to register.
  • 10. How do I enter?
  • 11. How to enter DV-2016 entries can only be submitted electronically The entry form is available for free at www.dvlottery.state.gov - the only official DV program website! You do not require the assistance of a third party to complete and submit an entry. Entries can only be submitted between October 1, 2014, (noon Eastern Daylight Time/4pm GMT) and November 3, 2014 (noon Eastern Standard Time/5pm GMT). Apply early to avoid heavy demand in the final week. No late entries will be accepted.
  • 12. Think carefully before accepting outside help. You are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of your entry, even if someone else submits it. If the data is incorrect, you may be ineligible to receive a visa. You should always be physically present when your entry is completed and submitted. You will be disqualified if more than one entry is submitted for you, regardless of who submitted the entries. If someone says you can register for the DV program after noon EST/5pm GMT on 3 November, 2014 don’t believe them!
  • 13. How do I find out the results?
  • 14. Entry Status Check The only way you will be able to find out the outcome of your entry is by visiting the official website at www.dvlottery.state.gov Results will be available from May 5, 2015. You will need your unique confirmation number to check the results, which you will appear on screen when you submit your DV-2016 entry. Print the confirmation page and keep it safe. You cannot check your DV entry status without your confirmation number. Your confirmation number cannot be retrieved later and will not be emailed to you.
  • 15. If a third party guarantees you a visa or says they can improve your chances of getting one, don’t believe them. The selection is computer-generated and random. You can only discover the outcome of your entry online at www.dvlottery.state.gov using the confirmation number generated when you submitted your entry. If you receive emails or letters offering you a visa, don’t believe them. Such messages are not associated with the U.S. Government in any way. If someone else submits your entry, they may withhold your confirmation number. If you do not have your number, you will not be able to check your DV entry status.
  • 16. What happens if I win?
  • 17. If your entry is selected If your DV-2016 entry is selected, it will not mean you have “won” a visa. Being selected means you have an opportunity to apply for an immigrant visa. Only a U.S. consular officer can decide if you are eligible to receive a visa. You will need to have a medical examination, pay visa fees and attend an interview before this decision can be made. Full instructions will be provided via the Entry Status Check website. If you are selected, do not delay applying for the visa. Visa numbers are limited and cannot be guaranteed through to the end of the program.
  • 18. If you receive emails or letters saying you have “won” a visa, do not believe them, even if they claim to be from a U.S. Embassy employee. The outcome of your entry can only be found by visiting www.dvlottery.state.gov from May 5, 2015. Other scam warning signs include promises of accommodation and employment, and requests for money to be sent via Western Union or similar services. No assurances can be given in advance regarding visa issuance. Do not make plans to move to the United States unless your passport contains a valid immigrant visa.
