Words of Remembrance

  1. 1. Words of Remembrance
  2. 2. And it seems And it seems to me you lived your life Like a candle in the wind…. Your candle burned out long before Your legend ever did. - Elton John
  3. 3. Breathe life Breathe life into that which was claimed for dead. Regenerate the faith of those who may be losing their faith right now. Be a comforter to those who have lost their loved ones. Be an encourager to those who are hoping for the best, but preparing themselves for the worst. - Prayer after the Asian tsunami
  4. 4. Day is done Day is done, gone the sun, from the hills, from the lake, from the skies. All is well, safely rest, God is nigh. - Taps
  5. 5. Do not stand Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there. I do not sleep. - First-century China
  6. 6. God is God is the light of the heavens and the earth. The smile of God's light is like a niche in which is a lamp, the lamp in a globe of glass, the globe of glass as if it were a shining star, lit from a blessed olive tree neither of the East nor of the West, its light nearly luminous even if fire did not touch it. Light upon light! God guides to this light whomever God will: and God gives people examples; and God knows all things. - Qur’an 24:35
  7. 7. God of grace God of grace and God of glory, on thy people pour thy power. Crown thine ancient justice story; bring its bud to glorious flower. Grant us wisdom; grant us courage, for the facing of this hour. For the facing of this hour. Cure thy children’s warring madness; bend our pride to thy control. Shame our wanton, selfish gladness, rich in things and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom; grant us courage, lest we miss thy righteous goal. Lest we miss thy righteous goal. Save us from weak resignation to the evils we deplore. Let the search for thy salvation be our glory ever more. Grant us wisdom; grant us courage, serving thee whom we adore. Serving thee whom we adore. - Harry Emerson Fosdick
  8. 8. God to enfold God to enfold me, God to surround me, God in my speaking, God in my thinking. God in my sleeping, God in my waking, God in my watching, God in my hoping. God in my life, God in my lips, God in my soul, God in my heart. God in my sufficing, God in my slumber, God in mine ever-living soul, God in mine eternity. - Celtic oral tradition
  9. 9. Hold on Hold on to what is good, even if it is a handful of earth. Hold on to what you believe in, even if it is a tree which stands by itself. Hold on to what you must do, even if it is a long way from here. Hold on to life, even if it is the easier to let go. Hold on to my hand even when I have gone away. - Pueblo Indian prayer
  10. 10. It is narrated It is narrated in a Hadith Qudsi: “ God Most High says ‘I am as my Servant-think I am. I am with him when he makes mention of Me. If he makes mention of Me by himself, I make mention of him to Myself. If he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an assembly better than his. If he comes closer to Me a hand span, I come closer to him arms-length, if he comes to Me walking, I come to him running .’ ”
  11. 11. May His great name May His great name be exalted and sanctified in the world which He created according to His will! May He establish His kingdom and may His salvation blossom and His anointed be near during your lifetime and during your days and during the lifetimes of all the House of Israel, speedily and very soon! And say, Amen. May His great name be blessed for ever, and to all eternity! Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, extolled and honored, adored and lauded be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, above and beyond all the blessings, hymns, praises and consolations that are uttered in the world! And say, Amen. - Kaddish
  12. 12. Lead us Lead us from unreality to reality; Lead us from darkness to light; Lead us from death to life. - Upanishads
  13. 13. Let us never forget Let us never forget the memory of humankind lost through horror, through injustice. May we learn and remember everyone in our worldwide family is part of the unseen plan. That those different from ourselves extend and enrich our lives as we learn from other points of view. That no matter what our race, religion, country, culture we will ever stand as one humanity, and in the planetary plan we are but one universal family. Let's take the worldwide view. Let's embrace each other wholeheartedly, going forward with caring thoughts, actions in grace and harmony respecting each other. - Holocaust remembrance prayer, by Susan Helen Kramer
  14. 14. Life and death Life and death are one, even as the sea and river are one. Beneath the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond, and like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring. Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity. For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and melt into the sun. And what is it to cease breathing but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek (God) unencumbered. Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountaintop, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance. - Khalil Gibran
  15. 15. Lord, remember Lord, remember not only the men of good will, but also those of ill will. But do not remember all the suffering they have inflicted upon us. Remember rather the fruits we have brought, thanks to this suffering: our comradeship, our loyalty, our humility, the courage, the generosity, the greatness of heart that has grown out of this. And when they come to judgment, let all the fruits we have borne be their forgiveness. - Holocaust remembrance prayer
  16. 16. Lord, we acknowledge Lord, we acknowledge that You are here, that You never left us even when all around us seemed to be falling apart. We are overcome by grief as we see the images of tragedy, as we hear the cries for help, and feel the pain of others’ suffering. Give ear, O Lord to the cries from our hearts and bring light to darkness, joy to sorrow, healing to pain. We come Lord for rest from the weariness of shock. seeking Your guiding hand in how we can respond. How can we express Your love, O Lord? How can we be Your hands, O Lord? Give us strength and courage to do what pleases You, that we can put Your love in action, by word and deed and make Your presence known. Loving Father, Healer, Restorer, and Source of all hope, remove from us those things that prevent Your love from flowing through us. May we make a difference in someone ’ s life that they may come to know Your r edeeming love and put their trust in You. - Carlene L. Douglas
African Methodist Episcopal Church
  17. 17. Memories Memories, pressed between the pages of my mind Memories, sweetened thru the ages just like wine. - Elvis Presley
  18. 18. Now I say Now I say to you in conclusion, life is hard, at times as hard as crucible steel. (Mmm) It has its bleak and difficult moments. Like the ever-flowing waters of the river, life has its moments of drought and its moments of flood. (Yeah) Like the ever-changing cycle of the seasons, life has the soothing warmth of its summers and the piercing chill of its winters. (Yeah) But if one will hold on, he will discover that God walks with him, (Yeah. Well) and that God is able (Yeah) to lift you from the fatigue of despair to the buoyancy of hope and transform dark and desolate valleys into sunlit paths of inner peace. (Mmm) - Martin Luther King, Jr.
  19. 19. O God of truth O God of truth and justice, we hold before you those whose memory we cherish, and those whose names we will never know. Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world, and grant us dignity as we pray for those who wish us harm. As we honor the past, may we put our faith in your future; for you are the source of life and hope, now and for ever. - Anglican prayer
  20. 20. O God of us all God of us all, let Hiroshima become for us a symbol of hope that nuclear weapons will never again be used to kill and destroy. Let us remember Hiroshima as a beacon to commit ourselves to find ways to live together in peace, that we may not be just peace lovers, but peacemakers. God of infinite possibility, transform our hearts and minds and give us courage to use our skills and technology to transform weapons that destroy into all that upholds life. - Susan Adams
  21. 21. O Great Spirit Oh, Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the winds and whose breath gives life to all the world, hear me. I am small and weak. I need your strength and wisdom. Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset. Make my hands respect the things you have made and my ears sharp to hear your voice. Make me wise so that I may understand the things you have taught my people. Let me learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock. I seek strength, not to be superior to my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy – myself. Make me always ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes, so when life fades, as the fading sunset, my spirit will come to you without shame. - Native American, Lakota
  22. 22. Once in a little pond Once, in a little pond, in the muddy water under the lily pads, there lived a little water beetle in a community of water beetles. They lived a simple and comfortable life in the pond with few disturbances and interruptions. Once in a while, sadness would come to the community when one of their fellow beetles would climb the stem of a lily pad and would never be seen again. They knew when this happened their friend was dead, gone forever. Then, one day, one little water beetle felt an irresistible urge to climb up that stem. However, he was determined that he would not leave forever. He would come back and tell his friends what he had found at the top. When he reached the top and climbed out of the water onto the surface of the lily pad, he was so tired, and the sun felt so warm, that he decided he must take a nap. As he slept, his body changed and when he woke up, he had turned into a beautiful blue-tailed dragonfly with broad wings and a slender body designed for flying. So, fly he did! And, as he soared he saw the beauty of a whole new world and a far superior way of life to what he had never known existed. Then he remembered his beetle friends and how they were thinking by now he was dead. He wanted to go back to tell them, and explain to them that he was now more alive than he had ever been before. His life had been fulfilled rather than ended. But, his new body would not go down into the water. He could not get back to tell his friends the good news. Then he understood that their time would come, when they, too, would know what he now knew. So, he raised his wings and flew off into his joyous new life! - Author unknown
  23. 23. Please consider Please consider for a moment what you can do to show that you lived a life of value. The possessions and social position you have accumulated during your life will pass away from you. Once you cross the river of death, such things will have no meaning. Because we were born in love and lived our lives in love, love is also the only thing that remains with us when we are in our graves. We receive our lives in love, live by sharing love, and return into the midst of love. It is important that we live in a way that we can leave a legacy of love behind us. - Rev. Sun Myung Moon
  24. 24. Praise be Praise be to the Lord of the Universe who has created us and made us into tribes and nations, that we may know each other, not that we may despise each other, and trust God, for the Lord is the one that heareth and knoweth all things, and the servant of God. Most gracious are those who walk on the Earth in humility, and when we address them, we say "peace.” - Qur’an 25:63
  25. 25. Remember me Remember me when I am gone away, Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by the hand Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay. Remember me when no more day by day You tell me of our future that you planned: Only remember me: you understand It will be late to counsel then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while And afterwards remember, do not grieve: For if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of the thoughts that once I had Better by far you should forget and smile Than you should remember and be sad. - Christina Rossetti
  26. 26. The Lord is The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures, He leadeth me beside the still waters, He restoreth my soul. He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: For thou art with me. Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies. Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. - Psalm 23
  27. 27. The Lord will always The Lord will always guide you and satisfy your soul in scorched places, and resurrect your bones; And you will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of waters that never fail. From you [i.e., your good deeds] will rebuild the ancient ruins; the generations-old foundations you will re-establish; They will call you "the repairer of the breach, the restorer of the ways of civilization.” - Isaiah 58:11-12
  28. 28. The whole earth The whole earth is the sepulchre of heroes. Monuments may rise and tablets be set up to them in their own land, but on far-off shores there is an abiding memorial no pen or chisel has traced; it is graven not on stone or brass, but on the living hearts of humanity.
 - Pericles
  29. 29. Those whom Heaven Those whom Heaven would save, it fences round with gentleness. The greatest conquerors are those who overcome their enemies without strife. - Lao Tzu
  30. 30. To every thing To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; A time to break down, and a time build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; A time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; A time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; A time of war, and a time of peace. - Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
  31. 31. Today I call Today, I call on the powers of forgiveness, the hope that heals and wipes away resentment, I am ready to forgive and heal old wounds. I forgive you for the past, making way for friendship and forgive all who have hurt me in the past, deliberately or by accident. I am ready to forgive myself for errors made and things I have done in the past that I regret. Healing replaces resentment, peace replaces anger as forgiveness grows inside me, my heart lightens, filling me with a sense of wellbeing and acceptance. I embrace forgiveness, the great healer of hearts. - Life Changes
  32. 32. We meet We meet in the presence of God. We commit ourselves to work in penitence and faith for reconciliation between the nations, that all people may, together, live in freedom, justice and peace. We pray for all who in bereavement, disability and pain continue to suffer the consequences of fighting and terror. We remember with thanksgiving and sorrow those whose lives, in world wars and conflicts past and present, have been given and taken away. - Anglican prayer
  33. 33. When I despair When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall . - Mahatma Gandhi
  34. 34. When you feel When you feel like hope is gone look inside you and be strong and you'll finally see the truth that a hero lies in you. - Mariah Carey
