Model United Nations International Conference organized by UPES CoLS (College of Legal Studies) University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Bidholi, Dehradun hosted its third edition of Model United Nations International Conference which was held on 15th & 16th Feb 2014 by UPES MUN CLUB under the aegis of Directorate of Student Affairs. The University had taken an initiative to introduce this concept by organizing the first ever College Level Model United Nations held in Uttarakhand in February 2012. In the wake of huge success of its earlier editions we had committed ourselves to raise the level of participation in its 3rd edition, by making it International. A Model UN is a creation of the United Nations proceedings, with students role-playing representatives of different countries in UN committees like the General Assembly, Security Council etc. The purpose of a Model UN is for students to achieve a greater understanding not only of the UN, but also of global issues, through an interactive and enjoyable educational experience. It is an attempt to engage students with global challenges, and encourages them to think creatively with an international outlook to problem- solving, that attracts many of the brightest minds in the country. Currently UN Secretary- General Ban Ki- Moon himself was once an MUNer. Our Conference structure includes a Secretary General and Under- Secretary Generals, with committees handling Finance, Fundraising, Logistics and Communications. We plan to simulate four main committees in the MUN. There will be a subsidiary body, the Press Corps. This will act as international media covering the discussions and debates of the conference and publishing their reports in a daily Newsletter. The 3rd edition of UPES International Model United Nations 2014 has achieved a new benchmark. The Chief Guest of the Conference was Shri Vijay Bahugunaji, the Former Chief Minister, State of Uttarakhand. The event has seen participation of 200 delegates from 31 institutions across the country and 21 Delegates from 5 International Institutions viz; Afghanistan, Bhutan, Germany, Indonesia and South Sudan.
