  • These are the main sites I will talk about, however it is important to note that Human Rights is a cross-cutting issue and information about certain aspects of the subject may be found in other sources. For example, peacekeeping missions may report about human rights in their area. International law is entwined with human rights issues, etc.
  • This is useful if you know the session or date of the information you are looking for.
  • The Universal Periodic Review is a new process and can be a good starting point for research, if the country you are interested in has been reviewed.
  • Special procedures is UN term for country- or subject-specific reporting mechanisms. Special procedures may be individuals such as “Special Rapporteur” or “Independent Expert” or groups such as “Working Group” or “Expert Group”
  • This database has more options for searching.
  • All of the Human Rights Bodies are listed here with an explanation of what the difference is between Charter-based and Treaty-based. In general, the UN conventions on human rights have an article that establishes a body to monitor the implementation of the convention. States parties to the convention report periodically to the Committee about their domestic legislation and practices related to the treaty provisions. This can be a useful place to look for national laws about human rights topics.
  • Because of the reporting burden for countries that are States Parties to many human rights treaties, they have developed a “core document” that is used by all the Treaty Bodies and supplemented with shorter reports on the specific subject of the treaty.
  • The Treaty Body database is a useful way to find Human Rights related documentation.
  • This provides an overview of the different types of documents produced by each body.
