    Notes on slide 1

1969: A warehouse for books and other materials Quiet, individual study Individual study space was small, preferred carrels that blocked views and tables. No comfortable seating No food or drink 2008 A combination of the old style and the new Information Commons Inviting and welcoming Comfortable seating some of which can be re-arranged. Good lighting. Group study rooms Large tables to spread out PC with productivity software Many electronic resources Books still warehoused in the library but running out of space

Future MNL and trend in library buildings: Open space with natural light Furniture that is comfortable and moveable, flexible arrangements Lots of technology: PCs, multi-media creation tools, presentation rooms Good lighting Quiet study as well as collaboration spaces

Teaching and learning styles have changed from: Lecture style—instructor talks, students listen and absorb Learning is an individual activity Only happens in classrooms at fixed times Classrooms always have a front Chalkboards or white boards Small desks or seats crowded together Rote learningTo: Active, participatory, social, experiential Use of technology Team projects Open discussion Learning takes place everywhere Learning that fosters critical thinking and development of communication skills Need space to spread out and use a variety of tools Information technology is integrated into the learning process

    7. Miller Nichols Library Planning
Building budget not sufficient to add both room for a growing collection and more desirable learning spaces
Off-site, high-density storage not an option
Automated Storage/Retrieval Systems in libraries– robotic systems – on site, very high density, immediate availability
