  • SLIDE: The Problem with DesktopsTraditional Windows desktop architecture is a source of pain for IT, End-Users resulting in an inefficient business.
  • SLIDE: Where are we headed? CLICKWe aim to deliver a new way to work by bringing together applications and data via a simple workspace accessible by end-users from any device – as dictated by their business policies
  • SLIDE: VMware View Delivers ValueVMware View transforms the desktop from a decentralized and rigid architecture to a centrally delivered and managed service that streamlines IT, increases End-User access and productivity thus impacting the Business through efficiencies and agility.
  • SLIDE: IT is Under Pressure from Every DirectionMeanwhile IT is under pressure with tight budgets, security and compliance, supporting the business and end user requirements. Traditional PC-centric architecture made IT projects difficult and expensive to deploy and manage resulting in a desire to just spend less. Security and compliance requirements often sacrifice productivity and innovation at the sake of risk avoidance. A locked-down environment with no budget for change makes it difficult for IT to enable business or be agile to changing requirements. And finally the consumerization of IT leaves users with higher expectations of their workplace technology. CLICK:These pressures coupled with the rigid and complex PC-centric model leaves IT in a vicious spiral of inefficiency, high risk, poor service delivery and inability to innovate. Eternally stuck in the vicious cycle of the Windows upgrade treadmill. We need to find a way out.
  • SLIDE: Enter the Post-PC EraAnd the reason for those opposing forces is the emergence of the post-PC era. For almost two decades everything revolved around the Windows based PC. The operating system, applications and data were all locked onto that single device. The hardware itself, drove the decisions on what you could install, change and do.CLICK: All graphics and statistics will auto-animate The focal point of the post-PC era is heterogeneity. Not a world without PCs or Windows, but one where diversity is king. In this new world there are many different types of applications like traditional Windows desktop apps, SaaS apps, Mobile apps, Enterprise Web apps that need to be accessible from a variety of different devices from traditional Windows, Linux and Mac based desktops, laptops, thin and zero clients, iOS and Android tablets and smartphones.
  • SLIDE: VMware EUC Platform for the Post-PC EraAt VMware we aim to solve this problem by delivering the Platform for the Post-PC era that embraces the heterogeneity while enabling IT to have that single point of control. On the left you see the traditional Windows PC, Cloud and mobile applications and Enterprise applications in the datacenter. Today these are all separate silos of technology. CLICKFirst we need to SIMPLIFY the environment by forklifting them out of their silos and converting them into centralized services. The Windows PC is now a centralized desktop service. CLICKNext, all those diverse applications are now a centralized application catalog service CLICKAnd user data which is traditionally trapped on the device is now a centralized data service CLICKNext we need a way to MANAGE all of these services. The universal services broker manages applies and manages the policies around the access and security of these desktop, application and data services. This new focal point of management evolves the management paradigm by bridging across to manage services that reside in both the public and private cloud. CLICKAnd finally we CONNECT end users to the desktop, application and data services through a device of their choice. This new platform delivers secure universal access to services inside and outside the organization to end users located anywhere in the world.
  • SLIDE: VMware View Delivers Desktop as a Managed ServiceVMware View and ThinApp enable the delivery of desktops as a managed serviceCLICKVMware View and ThinApp simplifies the Windows desktop and application and turns them into a centralized service (otherwise known as VDI), that is managed through the View Broker, a central console for virtual desktop service management. Transitioning to a centrally hosted model increases control and eliminates the need to have data or apps sitting on the local device, thus increasing security. By turning Windows apps and desktops into services, IT is able to break between the layers with virtualization, isolate and encapsulate them from each other thus reducing conflict and friction. Provisioning and updates are quick and easy and the Windows support burden is decreased.CLICKEnd users then connect to their Windows desktop services from device of their choosing, a non-PC device like tablets, and thin clients many that may leverage other platforms like Linux, Android and iOS. This in turn gives end users greater flexibility and freedom to be productive no matter where they are and what they are using. In this phase can dramatically reduce Windows desktop TCO by reducing the time and cost of application and desktop provisioning, patching, updating and support. These operational savings free up IT time and resource to innovate beyond traditional PCs.CLICKHow does View deliver desktops as a service? This is the high level architecture of VMware View
  • VMware View helps to enhance the security of the desktop environment through the centralization of the desktop componentsAll interaction with the desktop in the datacenter is encrypted through the protocol. Customers can choose to also enable SSLVPN as another layer of security in addition to the encrypted UDP protocol Also since all desktop components are running in the datacenter, IT organizations are in a better position to control who has access to those resources and data. They also have better control over what an end-user can do with that data (for example, can they move data from the desktop to a local device)The View solution through auditing capabilities helps to simplify compliance requirements that many IT organizations are faced with. Unified Access: Delivers a secure, encrypted session to Terminal Services, Blade PCs and physical desktops alongside View virtual desktops. Additionally a central point of control enables IT to instantly enable or disable users of these services.Configurable settings enable IT to customize the security policies of View to comply with and enforce corporate security policyTwo factor authentication is supported by multiple partners: (new with 5.1)RSA SecurIDVASCO DIGIPASSSMS PasscodeSafeNetSecurity Server provides the ability to have secure, encrypted sessions for end users outside of the firewallOffline desktop policy settings can expire access if policies are not current. VM encryption also ensures data protection of sensitive IPCustomizable settings for client certificate handling uses standardized browser security certificate handling models to increase security at the client endpoint. This is important as customers embrace BYOPC/Device models where a good percentage of devices will not be corporate provisioned.Cut & Paste: Enable or disable the ability to cut and paste between the VM and client device session. This is a great way to ensure data protection for users who may have access from home PCs and laptop type devices.VMware View helps to enhance the security of the desktop environment through the centralization of the desktop componentsAll interaction with the desktop in the datacenter is encrypted through the protocol. • VMware View client enables flexible online access to View virtual desktops across a wide variety of devices for a desktop that follows the user. The View Client is software that runs on an endpoint device and enables an end-user to access their View desktop running in the datacenter. The View Client runs on a number of different endpoint devices including traditional or thick clients. This includes desktop and laptop computers running Windows and Mac OSSeveral vendors enable Repurpose PC solutions that will remove the OS on the end point device and replace it will a very thin OS purpose built to only run the View Client. This helps reduce OpEx associated with managing the end-point OS while helping to keep down CapEx by enabling the reuse of existing PCsThe View client is supported on Linux through some of our ThinClient partners as well as through an open source clientThe View Client is also supported on Thin Client and Zero Client devices. While Thin Clients have a very small OS a Zero Client will have no OS on the end point. This increases end-point security while helping to reduce OpEx associated with managing the endpoint device. The View Client is also available for tablet devices like iPad and Android. All View Clients for Mobile require and environment of View 4.6 or greater
  • SLIDE: Delivering Delighted End Users and IT HeroesThe VMware end user computing platform aims to deliver value for not only IT and end-users but also the business. CLICKProviding IT with the tools to gain control and management of the technology environment to enable end-users and fuel the business, the workforce is more productive and efficient thus resulting in business gains around ability, growth and competitiveness.

  • © 2009 VMware Inc. All rights reserved Americana has a Potential of Saving AED 500,000 on its Physical Desktops/Laptops
  • 2 Welcome Americana (Kuwait Food Company) Embrace: VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) Sept 17th 2013
  • 3 Desktops Have Outlived Their Lives::  Desktop is 20 to 25 years old idea/concept and the technology. Its use and sales are declining year over year.. PC/Desktops shipment dropped by 14% in first quarter of 2013 than 2012 and are further dropping qtr over qtr.  During its lifecycle, hardware footprint became smaller, laptops came, more powerful multi core processors came, new windows versions appeared one after the other.  We all have love and hate relationship with our desktops/laptops  Actually , no fundamental innovation was seen in the desktops  Now Windows 8 sales have leveled off, no growth is seen in the face of modern tablets , new smart phones etc.
  • 4 Americana End Users Perspective ! Irksome Go To the Desktop Break Fix Calls Fixing issues on site or by teamviewer , back up, windows corruption etc etc, at Head Office as well as multiple remote locations/offices. Considerable user down time as well IT department time and costs. Americana’s Users Inter Offices/Branches Shifting and Movement Entails either the desktop to be also shifted along with the user or create a time consuming new profile all together for the user at his new location. Migrations to New Win 7 or Win 8 On 1000 odd desktops, could be a very very challenging, week to months, time consuming effort, expensive long winded effort for Americana IT department. However , with VDI, it is a matter of few hours job, right from the VDI data center control & command room. Upgrading of Desktop Specs for New Windows OS like Windows 8, 8.1 On going more and more costs.. Patching Windows Updates On each and every desktop, any time, could be hogging lots of your 50 MBPS bandwidth expensive Internet leased line, slowing down your users WAN connectivity for business apps
  • 5 Mixed Bag Of Problem, Costs and Pains of Desktops End-User Pains  Apps/data trapped on a single device  Limited device choice and freedom  Limited remote access and mobility  Desktop and application downtime  Dissatisfaction and frustration IT Pains  Distributed computing environment is difficult to manage and control  Hardware centric model is inflexible and traps apps and data to device  Difficult to patch and update  High IT support costs Business Impact  Rising Cost of Business: $1 in hardware equals $3 in management  Compliance and data security risks  Rouge end user behavior  20+ hours lost per employee per year in end-user productivity  Lack of innovation  Inability to recruit and retain talent
  • 6 Americana’s End Users Perspective contd.. Growing Gen Y Workforce in the Offices:: New gen age around 30, who have lived their entire lifespan in the digital age, and they only are interested in and want today’s swanky gadgets like iPAD, Galaxy, iPhone, Blackberry, Lumia, Kindle Fire etc.. They don’t want to get bogged down or tied down by the traditional desktop or laptop provided by the offices.. This is known as BYOD (Bring Your Own Devices) revolution happening in the corporate offices. Only VDI, initiatives taken early on can keep or attract your young talented workforce in Americana. VDI makes their desktop chase them , anywhere, anytime on any of these handy devices of today. Necessity is the Mother of Invention:: VDI has come of age into the mainstream, because of the agony, frustration, sleepless nights, costs overrun of the distributed processing, client server architecture of 90’s era has brought to the offices, businesses and the world. VDI is Inevitable:: Let us face it, PC is fast becoming defunct giving way to thin clients, zero clients ,tablets, smart phones etc.. Sooner you embrace it , more and more benefits Americana will reap in terms of its ROI, user productivity, retraining its lead in the forefront of insurance business in the UAE.
