  3. 3. Fort Ward was built by Union forces to helpprotect Washington, DC during the civil war.It is the best preserved of the system of fortsbuilt for this purpose. The museum offersseveral exhibits, tours, lectures, video series,and living history activities. The museum helps preserve thestory of thousands of slaves that passedthrough these walls on their way to a life ofhard labor and bondage. The Carlyle House was a center of politicaland social life in Alexandria during the mid1700s and gained further recognition inhistory when it became British GeneralBraddocks headquarters in 1755. Braddockmet with colonial governors there to planthe initial campaigns of the French andIndian War. Today there are daily tours ofthe home, exhibits, lectures, and programsfor school children.
