  5. 5. Traffic – across the Öresund Helena Kyster-Hansen, Tetraplan A/S Transportforum 2011, Linköping 13.01.2011 Interviews drivers and companies3 qualitative company interviews in 2009:•Per Damgaard Transport•Alex Andersen Ølund•Frode Laursen6 qualitative driver interviews i 2009Further 7 company interviews and 13 driverinterviews are planned in 2011. Helena Kyster-Hansen, Tetraplan A/S Transportforum 2011, Linköping 13.01.2011 Interviews with drivers and companiesSummary:•EMS is used very differently•Terminal-terminal•Used only in conjunction with interchanges – although it takes time andis expensive•EMS particularly useful for volume cargo – light food, flowers etc.•Capacity is utilised at least as good as in normal trucks•EMS is used only when appropriate capacity is needed•Application of EMS requires more planning Helena Kyster-Hansen, Tetraplan A/S Transportforum 2011, Linköping 13.01.2011 5
  6. 6. Interviews with drivers and companiesSummary:•EMS are typically driven by older, experienced drivers•Some drivers have undergone training•Drivers believe training should be mandatory•Drivers are both Danish and foreign•Driving often evening/night•Presently no experience in winter driving (interviews conducted beforethe winter weather)•No manoeuvre problems or operational problems (However slightly atintersections, turns and roundabouts)•Introduction of EMS has generally not resulted in modified routeselection Helena Kyster-Hansen, Tetraplan A/S Transportforum 2011, Linköping 13.01.2011 Traffic safety and environmentTraffic safety• No accident with EMS• Accident on rebuilt premises not involving EMS – but 11 areas of attention selected.Environmental consequences• Air pollution – emissions are reduced by some 8%• Noise load is reduced correspondingly – 58 db(A) the line closer to the road middle. Helena Kyster-Hansen, Tetraplan A/S Transportforum 2011, Linköping 13.01.2011 Road users’ positions In 2009: Completed questionnaires at the DCF (Danish Cyclist Federation) Annual Congress: • 100 questionnaires distributed: Response rate 73. • 8 % have met EMS • 78 % think EMS is more dangerous for cyclists than other trucks Ongoing contact with FDM (Federation of Danish Motorists) In 2010: • Web-based questionnaire, announced at a number of locations • Focus on EMS in Megafon study • Interviews of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians at selected sites Helena Kyster-Hansen, Tetraplan A/S Transportforum 2011, Linköping 13.01.2011 6
  7. 7. Evaluation of trial period with EMS Special data collection by Statistics Denmark Helena Kyster-Hansen, Tetraplan A/S Transportforum 2011, Linköping 13.01.2011 Special data collections A unique opportunity to cover some important questions about EMS  The 1st data collection was done in the 2nd week of 2010 and the results are part of the midterm report of May 2010 The 2nd data collection was done in the 2nd week of November 2010 and the results will be part of the final report after the summer this year Helena Kyster-Hansen, Tetraplan A/S Transportforum 2011, Linköping 13.01.2011 The data collection includes two questionnaires:Q 1: The companies usage of EMS in general, andtheir specific usage in the week of data collectionQ 2: Travel data on selected EMS units in theweek of data collection Helena Kyster-Hansen, Tetraplan A/S Transportforum 2011, Linköping 13.01.2011 7
  8. 8. Companies and MVT units Incl. all 61 companies owning EMS units 99 dollies, 205 link-trailers and 4 centre axletrailers Selected 99 EMS units, (51 dollies, 45 link-trailers and 3 centre axle trailers) Max. 2 EMS units pr company Level of responses: 77% (47 companies) Helena Kyster-Hansen, Tetraplan A/S Transportforum 2011, Linköping 13.01.2011 EMS units used in EMS transports Number of units On hire Own/leased Dolly Centre axle trailer Link-trailer Long trailer Helena Kyster-Hansen, Tetraplan A/S Transportforum 2011, Linköping 13.01.2011 What roads do EMS units use? Motorway,  Main road,  Other road Helena Kyster-Hansen, Tetraplan A/S Transportforum 2011, Linköping 13.01.2011 8
  9. 9. Which types of goods does EMS transport? Helena Kyster-Hansen, Tetraplan A/S Transportforum 2011, Linköping 13.01.2011 Why chose different types of EMS?  Link-trailer combination = high flexibility  Dolly combination = low cost Helena Kyster-Hansen, Tetraplan A/S Transportforum 2011, Linköping 13.01.2011 Where are the EMS units interchanged? Location No. of companies Port 13 Rest stop 10 Transport centers 30 Private Terminals 15 Customs terminals 2 Industrial parks 1 Helena Kyster-Hansen, Tetraplan A/S Transportforum 2011, Linköping 13.01.2011 9
