RefWorks 2012

  1. 1. A Very Very Quick Overview
  2. 2. What is RefWorks A web-based product that simplifies the process of documenting sources in a research paper, dissertation, or other project requiring references. It helps you to:  create and manage collections of references using a web browser  import references from a number of online databases  create bibliographies that can be inserted into word processing documents.
  3. 3. Create a RefWorks Account At the Library homepage, click on Search POLAR under “Quick Links”At the POLAR page, click on RefWorks link
  4. 4. Create a RefWorks Account The RefWorks homepage Log-In or Sign up for an Individual Account
  5. 5. Create a RefWorks Account Make sure the grey box reads RefWorks User Login for Ohio Northern University If creating an Individual Account, it is important to initially start from the HML homepage only
  6. 6. Create a RefWorks Account Fill in the blanks and a Congratulations window will appear. You are ready to begin importing citations.
  7. 7. Getting help with RefWorks  For help, see a reference librarian at Heterick  Tutorials on the help page are excellent
  8. 8. Exporting and Importing Citations Many of the databases available at ONU support importing citatins from RefWorks. All Ebsco databases do, as do most OhioLINK databases and Proquest databases (shown below) The new library catalog will export to RefWorks as well

  10. 10. Exporting from Ebsco databases Access Click on Choose Databases tab to get a complete list of all databases indexed through Ebsco
  11. 11. Exporting Citations – EbscoAfter you’ve completed a search on one (or more) of the Ebsco databases… …from the Result List, click Add for the records you want to import

  15. 15. Exporting Citations - Ebsco 1. Select Direct Export to RefWorks 2. Check Remove the items from folder after saving if you want to clear the folder 3. Click Save
  16. 16. Importing Ebsco to RefWorks 1. Enter your login name 2. Enter your password 3. Click Login
  17. 17. Importing Ebsco to RefWorks The RefWorks Import page will open 1. RefWorks will prompt with Import completed when it is finished 2. Click View Last Imported Folder to view your references
  18. 18. Importing Ebsco to RefWorks 1. RefWorks will display references in the Last Imported Folder window 2. For information about searching and sorting your citations or about creating and organizing folders click the RefWorks HELP link, or for information about downloading citations from different databases, see the RefWorks help links in the library’s database lists (see second image below) 3. Click the Olinks icon to see if an article is available in full-text, print, or microform format and to submit an interlibrary loan request.

  25. 25. Write-N-Cite Choose the correct version:Write-N-Cite (WNC) is a utility that allows users (who meet the compatibility requirements below) to run an abbreviated version of RefWorks in Microsoft Word
