Tips And Templates For Test Managers - Presentation Transcript

    1. Tips & Templates For Test Managers Tony Simms MBCS CITP www.roque.co.uk
    2. Introduction
      • This session covers a number of templates that I have adapted over the years from work done by others, … for their effort I am very grateful.
    3. “ About the most originality that any writer can hope to achieve honestly, is to steal with good judgment.” Josh Billings
    4. Introduction
      • Templates are NOT brain transplants
      • Read, Understand, Adapt and Review
      • Cut and Paste with care
      • Keep a master – Work on a copy
      • Save regularly
      • Get independent review before issue
    5. Introduction
      • These templates will follow the major stages of a test
      • project (but very quickly!):
      • Test Strategy
      • Estimating Test Effort & Resource
      • Reporting & Tracking Test Milestones
      • Daily (weekly) Test Progress Reporting
      • End of Testing Report
    6. Test Strategy
      • The Test Strategy is your chance to set the tone of your ‘reign’. The ‘Test Strategy’ requires you to:
      • Get ‘buy in’ from all major stakeholders
      • Read all the relevant documentation
      • Ensure that the approach fits the needs of the project
      • Address both IT and Business requirements
Email [email_address] to request a copy of the template in word format
    7. Test Strategy
      • The supplied template covers:
      • Scope
      • Testing Requirements
      • Test Rationale
      • Test Phases, Activities and Sign Offs
      • Acceptance Criteria
      • Team Structure
      • Test Environments
      • Test Reporting
      • Risks and Assumptions
      • Test Deliverables (Work Products)
      • “ I cannot discover that anyone knows enough to say definitely what is and what is not possible.”
      • Henry Ford
    8. Estimating Test Effort & Resource
      • Test estimation is a black art
      • Past Experience
      • More valuable if a similar project within the same organisation. Works best where there are detailed records from previous work.
      • Similar Components – Industry Published Data
      • Data hard to come by, but can be useful. Develop contacts via conferences etc.
      • Configurable Estimation Formula
      • The template supplied with this presentation allows for variables to be used to estimate required time and effort.
Email [email_address] to request a copy of the template in excel format
    9. Estimating Test Effort & Resource
      • Test estimation should take into consideration the following:
      • Complexity of components and/or change
      • Number of components
      • Preparation, Documentation, Review, Reporting
      • Setup and maintenance time
      • Number of development releases or cycles
      • Number of test phases
      • Number and capability of resources
      • Contingency for error, re-work and ‘poor soldering’
      • “ Why a four-year-old child could understand this report. Run out and find me a four-year-old child.”
      • Groucho Marx
    10. Daily (weekly) Test Progress Reporting
      • Simple, easy to complete daily or weekly report forms make it easy to show project managers the progress and trends in testing. The attached template reports on:
      • Progress, Issues and Actions
      • Test run rate for scripts and steps
      • Script pass and fail rates
      • Issues raised and closed
Email [email_address] to request a copy of the templates
    11. Reporting & Tracking Test Milestones
      • Keeping track of progress towards test milestones requires understanding the ‘whys’ as well as the ‘whats’.
      • Progress trends towards milestones
      • Issues and Actions
    12. End of Testing Report
      • The attached template gives a framework which can be used to detail the results of the testing. It covers;
      • The executive summary
      • Detailed reporting of
            • Environments used
            • Tests run
            • Requirements covered
            • Issues raised
            • Impact assessment
            • Issue resolution
            • Exit and Entry Criteria
      • “ Insight, I believe, refers to the depth of understanding that comes by setting experiences, yours and mine, familiar and exotic, new and old, side by side, learning by letting them speak to one another.”
      • Mary Bateson
