  • Is this a fair description of Facebook?
  • Explain this imageSocial Media is connecting people. People with ideas and information. Facebook is literally digital word of mouth. There are nearly 1 billion people with a Facebook account and its not even allowed in China yet which has about 1/6 of the population of the planet. This image was created by Paul Butler in 2010 who was an intern at Facebook at the time he created it. This image was created by visually mapping the social connections of the 500 million people on Facebook at the time.Paul was quoted “Not only were continents visible, certain international borders were apparent as well. What really struck me, though, was knowing that the lines didn’t represent coasts or rivers or political borders, but real human relationships”These social networks are quickly competing for attention and are becoming a part of our global information sharing system

  • You can tag any friend, any fan page you’ve joined, any group you’re a member of and any event you’ve RSVPed to attend. A FB page can only @tag other pages – you can’t tag individualsYou can include up to six @ tags in any update. Use the @ tagging strategically and your post will show up on your friends’ walls and other fan pages’ walls per the tag.
  • Everything (except email)s are public by defaultChange this for personal use, but consider the implications for public useIn general, if you’re not comfortable with something being plastered on the cover of a major magazine, found in a Google search, or proud for your own mom to see, then don’t put it online. Period.

  • The important thing to learn from this data is to understand how your content trends over time. You may find that it takes some time for your content to “lift” and reach many people. This can be very helpful when planning promotions and other time sensitive initiatives.
  • search by new likes and even by unlikesHaving demographic information about your fans allows you to build personas of your target audience. This can be very beneficial when creating landing pages, home page copy and overall marketing messages.
