The application of the techniques will be presented as part of an overall framework identifying key deliverables and the major steps from modeling and analyzing the current state to the design of the future state. The learning environment In addition to the lecture and discussion of class specific topics the group exercises are designed to apply the techniques in creating the required work products from an examination of a realistic business scenario. The exercises are designed to provide the participants the opportunity to evaluate and work with a number of situations designed to represent actual conditions found in a real business. As part of the learning process the participants will be asked to share their answers and the assumptions made in creating the required work products. The review of the group activities will be led by facilitators experienced in modeling and analyzing a business. In-Class Workshops and Group Exercises: The participants will be assigned a number of individual practices to reinforce the application of individual techniques. In addition a number of group activities will be assigned for the participants to apply a number of the individual techniques and create specific deliverables. Lesson 3: Analysis of major process performance Gain knowledge and skills to complete the following: 1) Apply the approach and framework for analysis of process performance; 2) Align process performance measures and targets to business strategy; 3) Assess major process performance Align major process performance measures and performance targets to Critical Success Factors Identify and rank performance gaps Identify and classify root causes of performance gaps Select value opportunities and value drivers Group Activity: Conduct analysis of the performance of a major process Participants will receive information on the strategy of the business and a description of the existing operating condition to create the following deliverables: Determination of process criticality Selection of critical major processes for analysis Selection of critical performance measures and performance targets Documentation of performance gaps Identification of value opportunities and value drivers Lesson 4: Create current state logical process model The learning objectives are for the participants to: 1) Partition major process model into sub processes and elementary processes; 2) Create logical or essential process model; 3) Complete specification of all layers in process model; 4) Apply an overall iterative approach for expanding and refining the process model Decompose major process into sub-processes Break process transformation into: process logic and enablers Expand definition of business events and their properties Define properties of elementary process and discrete events Describe overall, iterative development approach Group Activity: Create current state logical process model Information will be distributed on the details of a major process transformation and the participants will be asked to decompose the given process into sub processes and elementary processes. The participant s assignment is to produce the following work products: Process decomposition of the selected major process into sub and elementary processes Description of processing logic Identification of the events triggering the sub processes Documentation of elementary process logic and properties Lesson 5: Create model of current state implementation of a business process Key objectives of this chapter are: 1) Gain the knowledge and skills to create a model describing the current state implementation; 2) Apply the techniques and approach to build a workflow model; 3) Apply the approach and techniques to define roles and tasks; 4) Integrate the development of both logical and physical process models Introduce the concepts and application of a workflow model Describe key steps and approach to build a workflow model

Introduce different diagrams and diagramming conventions Describe approach to develop and integrate process and workflow models Describe current state implementation and document activities and roles Integrate logical and physical process model views Group Activity: Model current state implementation of selected sub process Participants will receive information on the current state implementation of the selected business process to create work flow models at different levels of details. Participants will also be asked to integrate both logical and physical process models. The required work products are: Work flow models Documentation of tasks and roles Updates to the process model built in the previous exercise Lesson 6: Conduct in-depth analysis of performance The objectives are for the participants to accomplish the following: 1) Learn the approach and steps for conducting a detailed analysis of the current state performance; 2) Acquire the knowledge and skills to identify root causes from the information provided by the different models; 3) Gain knowledge of the approach and basis of approach and steps for determination of the breadth and depth of the modeling and analysis Select sub process performance measures and performance targets Align sub process measures and targets to major process and the support of the business Apply different models to establish root causes of performance deviations Gather and analyze performance data Conduct detailed analysis of performance at elementary process and physical activity levels Group Activity: Analysis of sub process performance This group exercise builds on the analysis of results at the major process level and the additional modeling to finalize the identification of problems and root causes. The exercise asks for completion of the following work products: Selection of performance measures and performance targets Gathering of elementary process and activity performance data List of problems Use of different models for conducting the analysis of performance Identification of root causes Lesson 7: Design the future state Learning objectives are: 1) Gain knowledge of steps in creating value proposition; 2) Apply the skills to create a future state process model; 3) Acquire the skills to design the implementation of the future state process model; 4) Gain knowledge of techniques for documenting the solution Select value opportunities and create a value proposition Create and document the future business process model Complete the event/response matrix Describe the decisions involved in design of future state Create functional specifications
