  • This chart shows contact points in the Liaison Profession. The left side represents where the Liaison Officer seeks/references their information and the right side represents the various destinations of their information. This communication chart is complicated for students as there are multiple possibilities as to where they get information. Students also have trouble matching information to the institutions they’ve visited because they may be considering 3-5 universities and 3-5 programs. TipsIt is good to use references (prospectus, online calendar etc.) to give your answers in writing and a place that they can refer to later.If you hear of another university offering something unique through a student, look it up and provide for our office as this can benefit our future planning the University of Windsor.Switch which circles come up first.

  • Evaluation TimePer slide, per wordEmergencies or interruptions (fire drill, announcements) will cause you to cut material from the presentation. Prioritize your presentation and remember that you should get students to start the prospect card at the beginning of the presentation.Interactionmay not be possibleUse show of handsMaintain control, don’t be afraid to refer individual questions to the end.   • General Information Sessions are given at the beginning of a Gym Session or a University Information Program where all Ontario Universities will be in attendance. You may not be required to do the GIS but it is possible. It is important that you make only neutral comments and do not disclose which institution you will be representing later in the session. Your ultimate goal is to give students quick, accessible and practical information about the applying and attending University next year. You should have received a guide to the content of this presentation at workshop this summer.

  • Knowing communication theory will help give you more options in your presentations.You can make new assumptions about the views and interpretations of your audience.
  • There are many strategies to communication which can be found in all academic areas whether it be in Computer Science, Visual Arts, Business, Languages or the Sciences. For our purposes we consider: RhetoricInvitational RhetoricNarrativeCyberneticsKnowing these theories will help you: increase consistencygain an appreciation for other viewpointsunderstand the use of testimonialsgain respect as a presenter.
  • The Rhetorical traditionalis the standard lecture approach which implies that the speaker is more knowledgeable, more powerful and very persuasive. Rhetoric is mostly practiced by politicians and sales personnel. Rhetoric has lost its value in some circles. Many students get bored of the rhetoric of Liaison Officers shortly after attending their second presentation. Using only rhetoric at times may force you into sharing stats and viewpoints that aren’t of interest to the student. Many people use rhetoric in Liaison but they are not able to “change gears” for the benefit of high school students.
  • The ultimate goal of invitational rhetoric is to provide a respect and understanding for a variety of viewpoints. It is not to change someone’s mind, or to be persuasive. Each speaker should be viewed as equally important and therefore share equally in time and in importance in the conversation. While you may not change someone’s mind, that is OK, not everything is meant to be changed, perhaps it should be accepted. Invitational rhetoric is a great way to learn what students are interested in and what they think.
  • As humans we have Narrative Logic:“did you hear what happened to Jane”“what happened at school today?”Who, What, Where, When?Humans understand the meaning and seek information specific to how we tell stories.Personal RealitiesWe make important decisions based on our own narrative (story)We can also make narrative assumptions about the way others are dressed, the stories they shareWhat is real and existent in one community may be completely different for another.Do you adjust your examples based on the narrative of your audience?: location, area of study, male/female, ethnicity? For example, if you are in a Catholic school, are you prepared to discuss what religious groups we have on campus, or do you know what halal means? Are you discussing Outstanding Scholars with students that are ineligible for the award?Many Liaison Officers use StoriesEntertainment valueTo help students interpret/experience difficult topicsHowever stories can give inaccurate impressions of what students will really receive when they come to university. Think of the various ways your stories could be misinterpreted before using them in all of your presentations.
  • Cyberneticscan be very predictive, exact and efficient. Cybernetics can be thought of as communication systems. At each step a decision is made regardless of outside noise. This approach comes from physics, math and engineering fields.This is an important approach for a recruiter as this manner of communication can be highly predictive and much more efficient.How Liaison Officers can use Cybernetic Theory:Cybernetics can be used to analyze our communication flow. Automated question programs: ask uwindsor.Examine which forms of communication are most effective.Each year our office prepares a communication plan – you need to know the details of how, where and when we will communicate with the students. You will see the details of our communication plan at the last part of our slide show.
  • It is important to understand how and when we use Liaison publications in the recruitment process. Properly timing our communications allows students to absorb the information at the right time and in the right place. If we gave all publications to the student at once:Students would not read all the documentsWe would not have a reason to contact them againThere would be a lot of wasted materials.
  • Understanding the websites and being able to refer students to the correct places for print materials is extremely important. It allows us to drive inquiries to the official information source. In a recent survey the x student association identified that students were more successful at verifying information when they used the official website for information.E-info is a great resource to find official information online but also allows students to find the information they need about other schools.   • There are two main documents for prospective students published by the University of Windsor:The ProspectusKnow how to place departments/degrees in the proper FacultiesInvite prospects/guidance counsellors, parents etc to refer to the admissions guide at all times for official information and be able to use memorized page numbers to find the information. *you will see a note regarding comments in the text which help to curb our liability by asking students to refer to the online calendar.Faculty BrochuresYou should be familiar with all of the information from the Faculty BrochuresYou should not hand out the brochures during your presentation as students will receive them in the mail (this would ruin the communications stream)Bring Faculty Brochures with you when doing fairs and pull them out only when necessary (people will take them from you)The Brochures are available at Guide Is mailed to students that have been admitted to the University of Windsor. (Do not hand this out as it is for admitted students only) You can view this document at any time at: to Update our old brochures with new ones while omitting dated material.
  • Follow the Uwindsor FacebookPageIf you see something strange on the Uwindsor page advise us.Uwindsor YouTube Channel can give you great stories about uwindsor and quick video references for students.Mary Ann Beaudoin sends out daily media summaries so that you can be current regarding on campus news.
  • Intrapersonal Communication – inside conversations – try not to make too many assumptions.Proxemics – Think of how your personal space affects others around you.Mass Communication – We are sometimes affected by viewpoints of Mass Communications from Detroit and MacLeans or current news items.Intercultural Communication – understanding mannerisms from other cultures can help you to be more respectful and make better assessments regarding conversation.

  • In groups of 2/3 you will be asked to write a short super bowl quality commercial regarding the following topics. We will use your material, so do your research and make it outstanding.
  • This presentation is given by an experienced Student Recruitment Officer or a returning Liaison Officer.

  • - Two people will map how to get to the schools, serve as navigators and set up the itinerary.Two people will pack the necessary equipment One person will book the restaurant and let them know we are coming ahead of timeThis work should be handed to Tim ahead of time to make sure everything is all set.Don’t be late – we have left people behind more than once (left on the stoop).
  • Using questions generated from the tours have each Liaison Officer answers the questions and then we give recommendations as a group for each answer. We should also include what type of audience is asking the questions to give more legitimate liaison scenarios.
